    3. Gleaned from the Scottish (Digital) Archive Network http://www.scan.org.uk/digitalarchive/index.htm Enter the "Vault" at this site and learn some more..... While this is not wholly on the site, it is something to note if you are planning to visit the National Archives.... In Scotland, taxes were levied on male servants between 1777-98 and on female between 1785-1792. Most of the servants listed were engaged in domestic work. The volumes containing the schedules of these taxes are held by the National Archives of Scotland (reference E326/5 and E326/6) and they give the location, name of the master and usually the name of the servant. 1. Argyll annual nnual Medical report, including Islay, 1891
    2. Sue Visser
    3. As previously mentioned, the Scottish (Digital) Archive Network http://www.scan.org.uk/digitalarchive/index.htm is a site well worth visiting. Included in the Archives is the Annual Report of the Medical Officer of Health in 1891. What an interesting thing to read. Certainly it post dates many of our families who emigrated, but remember that they left family behind too. Also the report describes living conditions. If this is the way that islanders lived in 1891, I'm sure that it must have been worse 40 years earlier. The following is just some of the gleanings pertaining to Islay in 1891: whooping cough specifically mentioned in Kilmeny (typhoid in Jura) a brief physical description of the hospital near Bowmore (the present Gaelic College?) population 8514; acreage 255,230 acres There is an interesting table of Births and Deaths during 1891, including a breakdown of causes of death. Another interesting table of reported cases of sickness of Islay with the numbers reported for various illnesses/diseases with influenza, whooping cough and measles leading the numbers. There were 9 houses reported as particularly injurious to health.under the Housing of the Working Classes Act. There were 66 deaths uncertified as to the cause of death and a total of 148 deaths in 1891. Cheerio Sue Visser Ontario, Canada

    2. John Conley
    3. At the Lindsay Registry office I found a rather convulted group of entries for the Glenarm Ontario Cemetary, where many former family members from Islay Scotland are buried. There is, in my family history the story that Donald Spence of Islay Scotland and later Islay Ontario donated the land. The entries do show he owned the 1/4 acre lot, purchased from Donald McFadden, who had bought it from Hugh McKinnon. The original purchase price was 15 pounds. After Donald Spence owned it it was later sold for 375 dollars. I don't know about the 'donation' perhaps the monies were returned to the church. Later entries for this lot on which the cemetary sits at the present time appear to be trustees of the cemetary. I did not have the time or funds to copy everything. The good news for researchers wanting to check out documents in the Registry office in Lindsay is that they are still using books with the original hand written entries, unlike much of the urban area of the province which has computerized the information. In the event you have not searched in Ontario Registry Offices you need to find the township, then the lot and concession number in a book. That book has entries such as Donald Spence et ux (means and wife) discharge of instrument xxxxx where that is a previous line, perhaps a loan or other 'instrument'. You can take down that number and then have the copy of the deed, will, or document brought from the archive. You can copy pages at a cost. If you look at the book for say Concession 1 Lot 20 Fenelon Township (the cemetary) you pay $8.00 to look at the book. Plus more for documents. I was in a hurry and did look in 3 books and I guess the surprise I registered caused the clerk to say "You only looked at 1 book right....shake your head up and down now....that will be 8$. " Too bad I was in such a rush, but it was a surprise trip as my Mother needed to visit her sister at the last minute so I drove. I can confirm something I saw here before, and have some video showing it, but the fellow who lives on Lot 17 Conc 2 where Donald Spence setteled is the last 'non' amish farm for some area around the Islay Road. I did see teams of horses in fields, and it was a bright spring day. I'll see what pictures I have when they come back and will try to post the list and find a home for the short video showing the Glenearm Church, the cemetary and the Islay Road. He and his family appear in the 1851 Ontario Census. Has anyone discovered a group of people from Islay who travelled to Canada, that is a ship list or have other information that might suit my time period?
