    3. Sandy, I was excited to see your message as I am sure we must be part of the same family. I am descended from Alexander McMillan and Anne Carmichael of Islay. I visited there last May and my one big recommendation is for you to buy the Ordnance Survey Maps Explorer 353 & 352 at the Celtic House shop in Bowmore before you search for the farms. The farms are clearly marked on these maps and make searching much easier. I am busy here right now with Memorial Day activities but hope to compare our family history soon. 3. Claire, You might want to read the book "A Dance Called America" I can't remember the author's name and I borrowed someone else's book so I don't have it handy. Anyway, the book covered Scottish migration to different parts of Canada and the US. There are references in there to Islay but it is not all about Islay. However it does paint a great picture about what it was like to leave Scotland, travel the Atlantic, and arrive / live in America (Canada and USA). Family lore has him coming to Halifax as a young man. He told of remembering seeing icebergs. I've asked about him before without much luck. Actually this time I was looking for general information on migration from Islay to Canada (Ontario, Nova Scotia) up to about 1860ish that might be of interest to us all. That seems like such a black hole. Why they went, how they went, ships, etc. etc. The general historical facts are so interesting. 1. Re: [SCT-ISLAY] McEachern/McKechnie of Islay
    2. Douglas Young
    3. Hi Diana, First let me answer your McKechnie - McEachern question - with notes I keep in my McKechnie family file: McKechnie is the english spelling of the family name. There are a number of variations in the spelling that have been found in the records. Variation are due to the translation of the McKechnie name from gaelic to english plus the accuracy and literacy (or lack thereof) of transcribers - both original transcription, through the years and current transcriptions. The most common spelling of our McKechnie family as found in the Islay, Scotland OPR records on Steves Islay site was...McKichan. The other spellings which were found: McKeachan, McKeachen, McKechnie, McKeichan, McKiachan, McKichan, McMichan + a few with Mac vs Mc. That being said, I have conducted extensive research on my McKechnie family in Islay and Ontario (mainly Cheltenham, Chinguacousy Twp. and Toronto) including those that have relocated from those two geographical areas to other parts of Scotland and North America. The earliest McKechnie record we have located start with Neil McKechnie and Martha Smith on Islay in the mid to late 1700's. Three sons of Neil and Martha immigrated to Ontario - Duncan (to Cheltenham 1831), Archibald (to Snelgrove, Chinguacousy Twp. 1833) and Donald (to Priceville Ontario 1847). If these names strike a cord with you then maybe we can help you. By the way I have a data base of all the Ontario Birth, Marriage and Deaths registrations from 1869 to the most current year of release (which varies depending on B-M-D). Islay farms that my McKechnie family worked on Islay were Daill, Gortanilivorrie and Gartloist, all located near Bowmore. One son of Neil and Martha was a tailor in Bowmore (Duncan) .One grandson returned to Islay to die - he died in Smaull. You do not mention first names nor Islay locations in your email so I covered the waterfront in my response. If we can help you do not hesitate to ask. 1. Subject: I'll Be Visiting Islay & Need Driving Tips
    2. Hi Diana, I don't know about you gals learning to shift with your left hand but us old geezers have had that down pat for many years. When your right arm was occupied keeping your girlfriend snuggled up close, you shifted with your left hand. Sure glad we didn't have seat belts when I was young. I have far more trouble judging the distance between the left fender and the parked cars. As others have said, there is not much traffic on the island itself. If you have a passenger, their "back seat driving" will be most welcome. 3. Hello again Listers! I'm wondering if anyone on the list can tell me where the New Kilnave Graveyard is on Islay? I'd like to visit the gravesites of my ancestors on my trip to Islay. I know there is a Kilnave Chapel remains & churchyard about 8 miles from Port Charlotte but I don't know if the New Kilnave Graveyard is near? Can't seem to see it on my Landranger map of Islay. Thanks, Diana in British Columbia, Canada

    3. Yes, I agree you do have to have your wits about you in NZ. I have been driving for 54 years, since I was 15 and I still drive to Wellington and back in a day sometimes-about 2 hours each way. The trouble here is too many young men with high testosterone and attitude. Sorry about the spelling errors in the last letter-typo errors in a hurry. I wish I could return to Islay, it is so evocative and peaceful. My time there was a very wonderful experience. I went to Canada in 2004 and that was great too but didn't do any driving. Celia.

    3. Hi Diana: In a book on Scottish names it stated that that the name McEachern and McKechnie interchangeable. Sorry I can't put my hand on it at the moment. I have connections to the McKechnies. The following is a small portion of my family tree: Donald changed his name to Murdoch and Flora changed her name to McEachern Murphy,Donald, McEachern,Flory, Kilchoman Neil, 16,Jul,1822, *Murdoch, Donald McKechnie,Flora * Kilchoman Isabella 1823? If you go to the birth deaths and marriages on Ted Larson's site you will find some McKechnies listed. You need also to check the McEachern name (all spellings!) Good luck Janet, Ontario Diana <dianado@shaw.ca> wrote: Hello again, Listers! Just wondering if someone can tell me if McKECHNIE is a variant spelling of McEACHERN? I have an ancestor who is a McKECHNIE from Islay but I haven't found that surname in the census that I've searched so far for Islay. Is anyone familiar with the surname McKECHNIE from Islay?
