    3. Hi Heather Thanks for posting this information. It has two daughters of Gilbert McTaggart and Mary McNabb (Kilchoman) marrying two Calder boys from Port Ellen. What I found interesting is that it has one of the Calder boys (10. John Calder, who married Margaret McTaggart, daugh of Gilbert McTaggart and Mary McNabb. ( We have a connection there as well) who had a daughter (your 'x')Flora Ann Calder, who married Neil McNeill in Anderston. Neil was the son of my gg grandfather and gg grandmother Duncan McNeill & Ann McAllister. If you are interested in this McNeill connection, get back to me offlist. Thanks again for the additional connection Regards Iain -----Original Message----- From: Heather Griffin [mailto:hgriffin@uq.net.au] Sent: 08 August 2006 07:14 To: SCT-ISLAY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [SCT-ISLAY] Calder and islay Hi all, Re Calders on Islay, the following is what I have in my family tree. 3. Hi there, I believe the William and Cirsty McCuaig you have listed there are my 5 x great grandparents, however they are a separate family than the rest of the McCuaigs you have listed which is why on the census it has William listed as William McCuaig instead of do. Hope this helps. In > that way you will be able to pick out possible family members. this is all I have on the Donald McLarty/Mary Love Union: Donald married Mary Love in 1833 on Islay and I'm trying to trace her. I can't find any information on Mary Love, except that she married Donald McLarty in 1833 and was born in 1805. Donald McLarty and Mary Love came to Canada to St. Andrew's East, Quebec (don't know the year but it would be between 1833 & 1843) where my Great Grandfather Dugald was born in 1843.(but more likely to be 1842 because he is in the 1841 Scotland census) However, I don't know if Dugald was the first child? Dugald married Catherine McMartin daughter of Daniel McMartin and Catherine Jackson. (Don't know where Catherine was born but probably in Quebec as well. Dugald was a carpenter. They moved to the Ottawa area in Ontario. Dugald is buried in our family plot at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa. He died in 1926. Catherine is buried there too and died in 1916. Their son James is buried there as well. He died apparently of heart failure at the age of 16. (I also found a picture of James). As their first child was born in 1843, and that would make Mary Love about 38 when she gave birth for the first time and Donald 40, I wonder if this was a 2nd marriage for Donald - or, if there were other children born in Scotland?????? Sharon, I have been trying to find the rest of their offspring. But have come to a dead end. However I did find a picture of Dugald when he was in his 60's. Nancy

    3. Nancy, I went into the Love Message Board and saw your posting there as well. So....I went beyond your message to find a couple of postings that indicate the possible location of the Isle of Arran and the Isle of Bute as a good place to start looking for information on Mary's family. As I have already indicated I have run out of B.M.D. registrations on Islay and wonder where to begin looking for the McCallum family your McLarty family is related to. By the way it would be good to have a list of the names your McLarty/Love family named their children. In that way you will be able to pick out possible family members. I am hoping that member's of the List, who have been to Islay can recommend points of interest Nancy should check out when she makes her trip to Islay in September. I, myself, have never been to Islay. Thanks, Sharon J. Huber, Bellingham, WA

    3. Hi Marilyn, My family also descends from this John and Ann. I have done a bit of reading and researching on Kintyre but haven't been able to make a direct connection. I think it would have to have been very early as they seem to be connected to Gilchrists at Glenegadale in the 16/1700's. The names are very similar on Kintyre but I just couldn't find a direct link.... This is very interesting information from your uncle. Have you read the information on Steve's site about the "Farming" and "Fishing" Gilchrists on Kintyre? I haven't been able to do much geneology lately but always did suspect some sort of a link to Kintyre. Have you read any of the information from John Hutton. He had an article in the Ileach a while back. He had some interesting theories about the Gilchrist families on Islay. He has completed his research and I think copies are in the Museum and maybe Family History group. He doesn't go back off Islay though. 3. Some information that I have indicates the same thing. It would be a Gilchrist that was born about 1650 (+ or - quite a bit) on Kintyre. I don't have enough names and dates to publish what I have but the information, on paper, that I have does date back a little over 100 years to a Donald Gilchrist who was born about 1815 and was quite old when he passed this information to his son Alexander. 1. Anyone with information on Mary Love?
    2. Nancy A. MacLarty
    3. Mary Love was my GG Grandmother. I don't think she was born on Islay. Her date of birth is 1805. She married my Great Great Grandfather Donald McLarty on Islay in the Bowmore area in 1833. I have searched for any Loves and can't find a Mary Love. Any help out there? I have successfully gone back to my 4x G Grandfather John McLarty b.1753, but can't find anything on Mary Love. After her marriage to Donald they both moved to Canada probably about 1835 or so. First to St. Andrew's East in Quebec and then to the Ottawa Valley. Nancy MacLarty.

    3. Hi Vicki, I just had a chance to check the book "They Came to Mara" and found your Calder family. Along with a family tree, some news clippings and photos, it lists the following information: "Thomas CALDER and his wife, Catherine (McNABB), were born in Islay, Scotland. Catherine was a daughter of John and Janet (Leitch) McNABB. The two oldest children of Thomas and Catherine were born in the United States; the remaining children were born in Canada. The CALDER family had settled in Mara by 1852. In 1862, Thomas purchased LOT 8 CON 2 where he spent many years with his family. Thomas, Catherine, and many of their descendents were interred in the Gamebridge Cemetary." Let me know off list if you would like a copy of the Calder info. I also have cemetary transcripts for Gamebridge. Christine CPEN <claudio@cyberbeach.net> wrote: Hello all, New to the list. Just beginning this journey. I have discovered that my branch of the Calder family originated in Islay. I believe that Thomas Calder was born in Kildalton, Argyle, Scotland in 1792. He and his wife, Catherine McNabb, b. 1797, left Scotland for the U.S. at some point after their marriage in 1818. Their first two sons, Donald b.1825 and Duncan b.1826 were born in North Carolina, U.S.A.. They then moved to Ontario, Canada and their next child, Andrew was b. 1829. They then had Thomas b. 1831, Catherine b.1838 and Margaret b.1840. Andrew Calder married Mary McNeil (also from Islay) b. 1838. Mary left Islay with her parents, Lauglin McNeil and Elizabeth McCuaig, at the age of approx. 6yrs. Her family settled in the same area of Ontario as the Calders. Andrew Calder and Mary Mcneil had 8 children one of whom was my great grandmother, Elizabeth May Calder. She married Henry Edward White and they had 5 children, the youngest being my grandmother, Mary Gertrude Victoria White. She in turn married Gordon Adams and they had two children one of them being my mother Sarah Glen m. Macartney. I have quite a bit of info. on the family here in Ontario but I am not at all sure about where to find information further back than Thomas and Catherine in Islay? Any suggestions would certainly be welcomed.
