    1. [SCT-ISLAY] McPhee/McDuffie/Shanks/Campbell/Ferguson Names
    2. anne lyon
    3. It has been a few years since I last made any enquiries regarding my family, so I thought I would take thew opportunity now as there are a number of new listers and maybe there is someone out there looking at the same family. My great grandmother was Catherine McPhee/McDuffie who married Michael Lyon/s born in Islay but lived and died in Glasgow. Catherine's Parents: John McPhee/McDuffie born c.1803 - ? Finlaggan, Islay - died 4 June 1882 Partick, Glasgow Ann/Nancy Shanks born/bap. 20 Sept. 1800 - Daill, Bowmore (I can not find when and where she died) John and Ann/Nancy had the following children: Jean 21 March 1828 Euphemia 26 Mary 1830 Killarow Marion 8 January 1832 " Ann 30 November1834 " Catherine 2 June 1837 " Archibald 28 August 1839 " Flora 7 December 1841- near Daill John's parents: Archibald McPhee/McDuffy - Euphemia Ferguson Children: John c.1803 Duncan ? Ann/Nancy's parents: George Shanks - c.1760 Islay, died 1820 - Jane Campbell c. 1760 Islay, - died 1810 George and Jane had the following children: Angus 1781 Jane 1785 Marion (Mary) 12/10/1788 Killarow Donald 1 March 1795 George 6 July 1797 Ann/Nancy 20 September 1800 If the naming pattern was followed I could assume - Angus Shanks was George's father and Marion his mother Donald Campbell was Jane's father and Jane was Jane's mother With then George named after his father.

    1. [SCT-ISLAY] Records of the Old Scottish Parliament
    2. Sue Visser
    3. This was posted on the Wigtown List and I wondered if it would be of interest to some of our Listers. Put "Islay" in the search box at the right hand side to find records pertaining to Islay. Sue Visser The records of the Old Scottish parliament are online and can be accessed at http://www.rps.ac.uk/ They are mostly written in Broad Scots which was the Kings English at the time. Fortunately there are also translations. They range from the time of Alexander II (1235-1249) to Anne (1702-1707) and contain a lot of information that might be of use to genealogists. Access is free.

Afternoon: I have a Nancy Currie in my family tree born 14 March 1826. After her birth no mention of her, but I have an Ann Currie. According to the family Bible there were only 8 children, and I have 9 in the family tree. Is it possible that Nancy Currie middle name is Ann? And therefore her name should be Nancy Ann Currie? 3. I too have connection to McDougall's of Torodale. (lots of different spellings for this place too). My connection goes through Alexander and Grace McDougall of Torodale, as listed in the 1841 census. The 1851 census records Grace McDougall as a widow living at Brahaonesary.

His father's name might have been Dugald Brown, as C&D seemed to have followed the traditional naming pattern, naming the lst daughter after her mother, and 2nd son after her father (ie Christina and Neil). They emigrated to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in 1839, then on to Fenelon Township later. I have also seen records that mention "Brown alias McCore". You might find some extra information if you search that surname. It also is the time for me to confess a bad thing I did about that time ! Sometime between joining the list on June 13, 2000, and attending the first Islay Gathering in Guelph, on July 15, 2000, a very kind lister provided me with details of a particular tombstone. Thrilled as I was to have received the tombstone information, I took it with me to the Guelph Gathering and it hasn't been seen since ! I had not even thanked the sender and was too ashamed at the time to appeal to the list to track down that person. For several years now, I have been secretly crediting Jana Ramsay Best, granddaughter of John Ramsay of Kildalton, but in recent conversation with Mrs. Best I have established that it was not she, so I am a complete loss ! At the beginning of the note I received, the writer explained that only a part of the tombstone inscription was visible as much of it had already sunk well into the ground, however the visible text reads . . . 3. Hi, Toni. I found the ship list and the D & A Sinclair entry. I don't recogize any of the other names on the list. I agree that it seems a bit odd if Daniel and his brother left home and Daniel's pregnant wife to go to Canada. Given the difficulties of that kind of travel at that time I would have probably have ruled against it. Mayabe it's just another of those frustrating/tantalizing coincidences. Very interesting site. I found a number of McKenzies but none I recognized. So far as I know at this time the first in my line to go to Canada did so in 1862. > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Date: Fri, 12 Feb 2010 21:17:30 +0000 > Subject: Re: [SCT-ISLAY] Shipslists > > > Mac, > > When you get to the shiplist website, click on Passenger Lists (the 2nd blue box) > > Then, under Ships Passenger Lists, click Search North American lists > > then fill in the name you are searching. > > > > By th way, I made an error in yesterday's email - D. and A. Sinclair were on the New Swiftsure, from Quebec to Montreal, on the 12th of July, 1819, not 1821. I'm going to have to rethink whether or not these can be the 2 young Sinclair brothers from Kilchoman, but it is possible that Daniel left Islay earlier than I thought, leaving a pregnant wife back home.
