    2. MARILYN FAVARO
    3. Donald Smith and wife Margaret Campbell, were living in Oa during the 1841 and 1851 census. Their daughter Mary brnabt 1816, married Neil Smith they were living in Oa as per the 1841/1851 & 1861 census. Neil was born abt 1806. I would like to locate additional info on him, parents/birth location. Neil and Mary left Oa in 1862, their passage being paid by John Ramsey. They settled with their family in Puslinch Wellington Co Ont Mary's brother Wm was living with them in the 1881 Ont census. Mary's brothers, the following info is known; John Smith married Margaret "Peggy" McArthur and Archie Smith married, Mary McCuaig. Marilyn Favaro

    3. While researching my own Smith line from OaIslay to Puslinch Wellington Ontario Canada, I came across the following; the burial of Allen Smith. Allan Smith from Islay son of John Smith, died in NassagaweyaHalton Ontario Canada. A little bit of research produced the following info: In 1814, John Smith and his four sons, Allen, John, Neil and Alexander joined Lord Selkirk's expedition to Hudsons Bay. Selkirk left his men to find their own way, when his mission could not be accomplished. John Smith and his four sons, took canoes and paddled their way down Lake Superior to Drummond Island where they stayed for 3 months. Later, they landed in Penetanguishene and headed for Toronto. In or about 1824, John Jr and Alexander settled in NassagaweyaHalton Ontario Canada. Their father and brothers, Allen and Neil joined them in the 1830s. John Smith Sr went to live with his son in law, Robert Ramsey, brother of John Ramsey in 1842. Shortly after his move he was injured and died. Neil Smith and Allen remained in the Halton area. I became interested in this Smith family after discovering Allen Smith's grave in Ebenezer Cemetery. His headstone is very old, but it clearly states a native of Islay. who died in 1874 and was 80 yrs of age, his son George is also buried there. Does anyone have any info on this Smith line, where in Islay did they hail from.? >From the early history of Nassagaweya, it states Allen was a religious man and would read a loud from his Gaelic bible, even though his wife and children had no idea, what he was saying. The book also states that Allen's family moved to Michigan after his death. Neil's family remained in Halton and in his retirement years, Neil lived in Milton Halton. Marilyn Smith Favaro

    1. [SCT-ISLAY] Duncan McAulay born Islay 1787 - 1790
    2. PAUL D MACAULEY
    3. Hi, I have been researching my MacAulay genealogy for a number of years now and the trail has lead me to Islay. My GGrandfather, Angus MacAulay, emigrated from Glasgow in 1856 after the death of his Scottish wife, Catherine Millegan and started over in Chester, Pennsylvania, in the US. He was, by trade, an ornamental plasterer. Early on in my searching, I found the following 1999 post on a message board: MACAULAYS IN PENNSYLVANIA A friend of mine purchased a copy of the rules of discipline for the Society of Friends of Philadelphia, published 1838. The book was originally purchased at the book shop of John Mulhern in West Chester, Pennsylvania (Chester County). Inside are penned three names: "Angus MacAulay/ Plasterer/ Edinborough Scotland/ 1875" and "Duncan MacAulay/ Rachel McLearan/ Born Kilnehearn/ Island of Isla." Elsewhere is written "Angus MacAulay/ Glasgow" and "Chester" (presumably Chester, Delaware County, PA). I assume the MacAulays were immigrants and likely Quakers (I find it hard to believe that the book was sold in Pennsylvania, sent to Scotland and returned to the U.S., but it's possible). I don't know what to make of it all, but I hope it helps someone. I was able to contact the poster in about 2003 but he didn't remember the post or who owned the copy of my GGrandfather's book. I found a record of Angus' birth to Duncan McAulay and Rachel McLellan in St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, on 19 March 1825. (His American records show his correct birthday, 19 March, but rather in 1835.) He was listed in the 1841 census living with his father, Duncan, age 50 in Glasgow. Angus' occupation was shown as plasterer and his father's as joiner. I found a record of Rachel's death in 1839 where Duncan was again listed as a joiner. The 1851 census shows Duncan, age 60, living with his children Mary, John and Margaret, and Jean, a niece, in Barony, Lanarkshire. This census shows him born Islay, Argyll. I have not seen the actual census image as it is not available on the Scotland's People site - the information I have is a summary of the image from Ancestry.com and from a friend in Scotland. The 1861 census image shows his age to be 63, still a joiner and born Kilchoman, Islay. As the ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years in the 1841 census, he would have been born 1787 to 1791. The 1851 census would have him born in 1790, or thereabouts, and the 1861 census places his birth date around the year 1798. So far, I haven't been able to positively establish his birth date or his birth place on Islay or the names of his parents through a record in the OPRs. If anyone has any information about Duncan or Rachel or any ideas to help further my search, I would be very greatful to hear from you. Thanks, Paul MacAuley

    3. What an interesting site - the Scottish Screen Archives. Many of the films are copyrighted and you cannot access them online but there are enough to make it worth while to watch. The films by Jennie Isabel Gilbertson Brown are especially delightful. The origin of the film may be on another island but there must be similarities and it gives us an idea of island life. For example: 'SCENES FROM A SHETLAND CROFT LIFE' Title (0.10) Peat from hillside to home (0.19) Ramsie makes sure his tushkar is ready for a day's peatcutting (0.24) A crofter re-shapes his tushkar with a hammer and then goes to dig the peat. (0.49) His wife calls him back to give him his packed lunch. He then continues on his way (1.27) He must first remove the turf from the top of the peat bank (1.33) The crofter takes off the turf with a special shovel (1.46) Please replace the divots. Crofter replaces the turf (2.06) Now he can get at the peat. He digs out the peat with his tushkar, which takes out the peat in oblong blocks (2.53) Lucky he has a thoughtful wife. The crofter stops work to eat his lunch and have a smoke (3.27) A week later his wife and sister help to raise the peat to let it dry thoroughly. Shots as the crofter and two women stack the peat for drying (4.27) When dry the peat was built into a roog and from there it is carried down to the house. The crofter and his wife load their baskets and carry the peat to the croft (6.12) The crofter's sister takes a few lumps of peat into her house (6.37) shot of smoking chimney (6.51) ecs (6.55) http://ssa.nls.uk/film.cfm?fid=0980&search_term=shetland&search_join_type=AND&search_fuzzy=yes I used the search engine for "Islay" and found a couple but had greater success for older films using "isle" Take a look at 'EILEAN AN FHRAOICH ISLE OF LEWIS' too. 3. Norma - are you SURE that this Anne is the right Anne? With the naming patterns, it's common to have people with the same names. 3. I agree she seems old to have children and her year of birth on the death record is 1780! In the 1861 census Euphemia is listed as 74 yrs old living with sons Neil, 38 and Archibald 35. That is why I think she may have been married younger. I know how common these names are, I haven't really had any new revelations on my research for quite some time, so I'm grasping at straws. John McLean but her children were born later in her years; Neil b. 1823, Archibald b. 1826, and Donald b. 1833. She may have had a female born earlier, but I cannot find record of it. It wouldn't of been unusual for Euphemia to remarry if her spouse, Archibald McPhee/McDuffy passed away. Neil would have been named after Euphemia's father. Perhaps Archibald was named after Euphemia's first husband? Euphemia's parents were Neil Ferguson and Salena Currie.
