Hi Marg & Peter, You would not wish to miss out on visiting the places from which your ancestors lived and toiled, so you should try to establish where these places are and how accessible they are. It was not until the end of the 17th century that services were begun at Lagavulin and the church at Kilnaughton may have continued in use until that time. 3. Hi Steffenie, Yes, it was at Christ Church, Frederica (Episcopalian, if I spelled it right. "Anglican" in Canadian.) You will find it beside the church, on the west side (I'd say near the southwest corner of the church), and not very far back. Many stones are hard to read, but his is still quite clear. It's a lovely, old church, and worth a visit on its own merits. The reason that we went there in the first place was that I found out that there was a "Sinclair Plantation" on the island, and I had a hope that it might have been an Islay Sinclair that I am trying to trace (Archibald), but I think it wasn't him. The museum at the lighthouse has a reference library about early settlers, as does the town library, but both were closed on Saturday afternoon. After all, there was a chilli cookoff going on! If you get a chance to drop in to either of these libraries, could you do a quick enquiry for me? All I could find out about Archibald was that he was called a "Tytheman" (whatever that meant 250 years ago?) and he sold the plantation in 1765. However, if you don't have time, no worries. We can stop in again next year. 3. Hi friends, Just heading back up to Canada from Florida, and made a detour to a place called St. Simons Island, on the coast of Georgia. Lovely place with fascinating history, so we stopped at a very old church yard for a snoop. Never expecting to find anything important, I was very surprised to find a gravestone of someone from Islay. It was the grave of "John Campbell Currie, born in Isle of Islay, Scotland April 15, 1855, died Aug. 14, 1921, St. Simons Island." Beside him is the gravestone of his wife, Henrietta Stevens, who was born on St. Simons Island. No other Islay people there that we could find in the cemetery, but the lettering does seem to deteriorate very quickly unless they are carved in granite. I went into the church to see if I could find out anything more, but didn't have any luck. I'll be happy to send photos of both gravestones when I get home to whoever is related to him (and to you Roger, for the Islay Cultural Database). 3. Carolyn, With the passage of time since we checked last, you never know what new connections we might make! I have a Robert McNabb with unknown parents, born 1807 to 1811 in Islay, married before 1836 to Christina Smith, with at least 9 children born in Mariposa, where Robert died in 1887. Might he fit? I have a John b. 1809 in Kildalton supposedly to Angus McNabb & Mary Campbell (from Ted Larson), but the parents' names are similar to the Alex/Martha below. Also, some of my McNabbs went from Ontario to Chicago area in 1880s. Very vague connection, I know, but .... My 4gt grandfather Ronald Johnston shared the Tack at Island with them and married first Martha Graham and after she died he married her sister Elizabeth as was the custom in the Highlands at that time when there were young children to look after.
