The surest place to find parish church records is the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh. Even though the records for some parishes have been sent to local archives, microfilm copies can be kept in Edinburgh. If you are planning to visit the NAS, be sure to tell the staff well in advance, because records are kept at three sites, only two of which are open to the public. The staff will arrange for the records you require to be at one of the two public offices. There is a lot of preservation of wills and testaments being undertaken at the moment, as part of the Scottish Archive Network project. At any one time, some of the records will have been withdrawn for preservation and photographic digitising. If you are interested in the Scottish Archive Network project, they publish a weekly newsletter on the web at http://www.scan.org.uk/News_Roundup This will continue to be published until the end of November, when their new website goes on-line.
