I christened my son Neil, and since he grew up to be a Celtic folk singer and has been to Ireland, he now spells it as Niall - wish I had thought of that first! Through his father (my ex) he traces his heritage back to Niall of the Nine Hostages in the 6th Century (Niall of the Nine Sausages, he calls it!)
