We are having trouble locating a family c. 1790s in the OPRs and was wondering whether there was another 'religious faction' at that time and could our family be recorded in another set of records. Or .. if there were other religious factions at that time, did those people still have to be recorded in the Church of Scotland Registers (OPRs)? (They were not Catholic). The family is CAMERON who are believed to have lived at Invermaille on the South shore of Loch Arkaig, so my cousin searched the Kilmallie film. Although finding 'hundreds of Camerons', he was unable to find brothers John & Angus. The mother's maiden names of the brothers were Ann McINTYRE &/or McMILLAN and we have another dozen or so names of siblings, so we believed we had enough information to positively identify this family. Given there were families from Invermaille on that film and ours wasn't there, should we be looking elsewhere - like Kilmonivaig OPRs or another set of religious registers? Has anyone got any suggestions please? Many thanks Elizabeth O'Connell New Zealand
Oops - posted the wrong question - here goes this time: Could someone please advise whether McKECHNIE and McECHERN could be interchangeable. I have a death cert (1876) with the wife's maiden name being the later, but it has been known, in recent years anyway, as the former. Is it likely we have a different person; or given that it was a Scots-born person who supplied the information for the cert, could he have been using 'the old tounge' when naming the wife's maiden name. She was either already deceased or never came to this country. Many thanks Elizabeth O'Connell New Zealand
