He apparently lived for many years on Skye and can be found in the 1861 census of Snizort living in the household of Alexander Macdonald at Lynedale House. He is listed as a joiner and as married but have not been able to ascertain who he married. He is also found in the 1881 census in the same household. In 1851, he was in Markinch as that was the year his father died and he may well have been there to settle the estate; he has his son, Joseph, with him in 1851 and he is staying in the household of an Agnes Pearson. He may have been living on Skye as early as 1832 since his father's will, written at that time, describes John's place of residents as Skye. John had an elder brother, Charles Norval, b. 1797 . Charles married an Agnes Anderson in Fifeshire in 1822. He also had a sister, Margaret, who married a Peter Lang of Gallatown; another sister, Janet, married an Alexander Kilgour of Thornton, Markinch and eventually emigrated to Pontiac County, Quebec, Canada.
