On Thursday, 30 November, St. Andrews Day, a new website will be launched, called the Scottish Archive Network. This is a co-operative effort between 47 of the archives in Scotland, including the National Archives of Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Genealogical Society of Utah. This site will, once fully developed, be able to answer all sorts of questions of the kind you are asking.
