Irene, The Clan Donald Centre, originally financed by an emigrant MacDonald, is run by a trust set up to preserve some of the history of the Isle of Skye. It also provides genealogy services to help finance its work. The centre has various resources for anyone researching people who lived in Skye generally and in the parishes of Strath and Sleat in particular. For anyone researching in these parishes all roads lead to the Clan Donald Centre in the end. Among other things, there is particularly useful information in the estate records detailing the tenants of the various crofts in the various Sleat and Strath villages over time, principally from about 1823. The archivist is Maggie MacDonald, whose knowledge of the islanders is extraordinary. She is ably assisted by a number of islanders, most of them volunteers. There is a website. They deal with email queries [payment by credit card] as well as visitors looking to know more about their people. R.
