Aluminium factories were built at Foyers (on the south side of Loch Ness), Kinlochleven (at the east end of Loch Leven) and at Fort William (Lochaber Works). The latter was completed in the early 1930's. During WW2, it was bombed on several occasions and luckily escaped any major damage. Not pleasant times! On occasions, the fifteen mile tunnel taking water from the reservoirs to the Lochaber turbines was shut down and repairs carried out. Again rather unpleasant! Incidentally, Fort William was the first town in Britain to have its streets and houses lit by electricity produced solely by its own water power. This was in 1896. Bill.
