First of all, a very big thank you to those of you who replied to my first posting about hugh Maclean. You have given me some very useful tips although no one jumped up and said "We belong to the families you are looking for". In this posting, I am listing other people who were mentioned in the will. This is more for the interestof others than for me, although it would be nice to know something about these people. Some of them might come from Inverness. In the will dated 11 August 1838 and signed in Edinburgh, Hugh appointed Malcom Macleod esquire of the parish of Saint Catherine, Jamaica, Alexander Elder Esquire of the firm Smilth Elder & co, Bookseller, Corn hill, London, & Robert Bartlett Parry of the parish of Kingston, Jamaica (Not yet investigated, but we assume a relation of his partner Ann Bartlett) to be his executors and trustees. William Falconer Esquire. I don't understand much of this part of the will - will make it the subject of a separate positing, but it seems to involve the selling, alienation and disposal of the Barony of Lentran as per a plan drawn by Neil maclean in 1814. There is a mill (more later) which was acquired by Thomas Fraser from Simon Lord Lovat - 14 September 1736 Also to do with the mill - "Hugh Fraser of Culkobokie as heir to William Fraser of Culkobokie, his father, dated 12 April 1670" To his servant Angus MacEachrin there was one hundred pounds sterling 12 months after his death if Angus was still with him at the time of his death. Witnesses were James Wilson Hamilton, writer , Edinburgh, Duncan Macdonald, writer to the Signet (Can someone please explain what this position was) and Alexander Christie, writer. In a codicil dated 18 June 1842 (signed in London) other people mentioned are: Slaves still living who had belonged to him or Ann Bartlett and were still living at the time of his death. No individual names are given Roderick Macleod, Manager of the Branch of the National Bank of Scotland at Portree - is nominated as another Trustee and Executor. Witnesses - A K Morton, Y Hill, John Ford. I will try to copy the part of the will that refers to the Barony of Lentran for a later posting. It will take some time as I am working from a photocopy of a "transalation" of the original which was done by my cousin some years ago. I don't understand a lot of it which doesn't help when transcribing. I hope the above is of interest to someone Wendy in Brisbane
