    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: MacDonald, McDonald Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/TeC.2ACE/1156 Message Board Post: I am interested in the name Iain MacEoghainn Bhain in Glenmoriston, especially the time frame of 1690 - 1750. In relation to a 1970 letter written by Dr William Matheson of the Department of gaelic at Edinburgh University - I have extracted the following information and would appreciate any local information on it. ....Iain MacEoghainn Oig (John MacDonald - abt 1723-1795) departed Glenmoriston or Glenurquhart, Inverness-shire in Sept 1775 with sons Duncan, Alexander, James, Hugh, and daughters Mary, Christy, Ann & Helen on the Ship Glasgow. Oral family tradition has been passed down by word and in print through successive generations associating this Glenmoriston_Glenurquhart MacDonald family to those who helped MacIain's son and heir escape from Glencoe in 1692 >From other information dating back to 1775, Dr Matheson came to the conclusion that the father of Iain MacEoghain Oig was Iain MacEoghainn Bhain and the family originated in Glenmoriston. Dr Matheson also speculated that this was the line of Iain MacEoghainn Bhain, a Glenmoriston 'bard' from the 16th century. I am aware of the note regarding the 5 'tribes' of MacDonalds in Glenmoriston within the following qoutes regarding the Grants of Glenmoriston: "Big John led his people into Glenmoriston, built his house there and settled his people, but there were five tribes of MacDonalds in Glenmoriston and it took several generations to subdue them. Those 5 tribes were Iain Ruaidh Illeasbuig Iain Chaoil Alasdair Eoghain Bhain" Any information is appreciated Regards, Ben MacDonald Glendale, Arizona
