I thought the wording was 'Isle of Lewis', which would have left no doubt as to where was meant. You may find evidence of a 'Macarla' family in Lewes. (see google.) Hi Sara, On the 1851 census, it is transcribed that Christiana Walford is from Lewes Idam, Scotland. Looking at the original, it seems to say Scotland Lewis Idam (island?) I'd love anyone to look at it to check for me. It would certainly make things easier for me if she wasn't from Scotland !
