    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: KENNEDY /McDONNELL /ALD Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TeC.2ACE/1411.1.1.2.1 Message Board Post: O my.....Put to the Horn indeed? This is most interesting, Chris. Thank you, and to Jane too. I have found South Ardachy now, between Greenfield and Laddie Wood, as well as some photos to help place a "face" on it. As well, I see the Ardachy in Boleskine and Abertoff, which I am assuming is the other one? Ironically though, it includes a Thomas/Jessie Gillespie sheep farmer family(1841/1851), though I thought the Gillespie you mentioned had taken over the South Ardochy location of my focus? I may have gotten that confused...so much new information. The Ellice family, as eventual owners of the estate, into this period, is of interest as well because of Edward Ellice's widespread influence in Canada as well, mainly in settling the Hudson Bay Company controversy there, where another family of Alexander Kennedys is significant, though I had thought they originated closer to Aberdeen and the Orkneys, rather than Inverness-shire. That Ellis is a marker name in the descendants of my Kennedy family raises the point. As I attempt to glean further history surrounding this 18thc period of the Clearances, which will take some time, I am forming several questions with this new information. My allegiences may be clouding things a bit, but I might wonder if this tribe of outlaws are called such by those on the other side of the issue? That is, those in the new power who would wish them, as crofters, gone? What/Who is the source of these records? Who owns the Sheriff?? If these Kennedys are Catholic Jacobites, stripped of their ancestral tongue and tradition and livelihood by the recent defeat of Culloden and the massive changes taking place in the glens, and still forced into military service, might they also be cast in such light in order to get them gone? That Ardochy and Daingean both disappear from the map seems significant as well....Our current politics over here surely reflect such manuveuring still? That they would have "lingered" there so long, after the major migrations of the McDonnell clan to Canada/Glengarry---also puzzles me with question. That they are so markedly foresters in North America--not a sign of a cow or sheep anywhere--and known for their integrity also. How fascinating. Maybe they simply tired of the slaughter and turned a pivotal point when they set sail? Now I must also wonder what is the significance of these near "dit' names, too? Bain Ban Breck Dow Dhu Og Roy I have seen them before, of course, but, without good GĂ idhlig wonder if they are significant designations that might reveal relationship within family/tribe? Again, thank you for all this help and insight. Joan
