Ardochy,as far as I can ascertain, lay on the south side of Loch Garry, between Greenfield and Laddy. On modern maps there is a house(?)in the middle of the forest clearing, which is called "South Ardachy".I believe this is where the farm settlement stood,or was close by.As Jane has suggested, watch you don't get it confused with a farm called Ardachy/Ardochy which is just outside Fort Augustus. To confuse things even further, there is a farm called Ardachvie a few miles away. I think you are right in saying that a Mr Ellice owned the estate that Ardochy stood on,but I don't really know anything about his affairs.Until the mid 1820s,I believe that Ardochy was rented/owned by a wealthy sheep farmer called Gillespie, whose family originated from the south of Scotland. Your Kennedys were one of a large number of an extended tribe,of approx.20 households, which stretched from the shores of Loch Garry, round the side of Loch Lochy as far as Clunes. In the 18th century they had a reputation for lawlessness, and were frequently involved in sheep and cattle theft. Here are a few cases I have come across, for instance: -1745.Eight Kennedy men from the neighbourhood were declared Outlaws, when they failed to appear at Court in Inverness on charges of armed theft and robbery. -1749.Kenneth dhu Kennedy,Laggan, habitual thief, was hung at Inverness. -1753.John breck Kennedy,a notorious thief and Army deserter, was hung at Inverlochy for cattle theft. -1760.John McIan bain Kennedy,Glasterbeg, was banished for life for horse and cow stealing. -1764.Banished for 14 years for cattle theft - Duncan dow Kennedy, son of Angus ban,Killinan. -1778.Hainy Kennedy,Lagganachadrome, declared insane and imprisoned at Inverness for the murder of her son. -1780.Angus Kennedy imprisoned for the habitual theft of cattle and money. On the night of his imprisonment, his friends took revenge on the Trial witnesses by slitting the bellies of their cows. -1782.Angus bain Kennedy,John bain Kennedy,John roy Kennedy, and Archibald bain Kennedy, all of Shian, declared Outlaws for not appearing at their Trial in Inverness. -1783.Ronald dow Kennedy,Shian, charged with theft and reset, along with the previously mentioned Angus bain Kennedy(his brother),John roy Kennedy, John buie Kennedy, and Archibald buie Kennedy. The same year,Katherine Kennedy, wife of Angus bain, and Katherine McDonnell, wife of his brother John bain, were found guilty of assaulting a Sheriff Officer who was trying to arrest their servant. How grandad Alexander,80 in the 1841 Census, relates to any of these miscreants is difficult to say,but I am sure there will be some sort of relationship. At this period in the 18th century,Ardochy and neighbourhood was still part of the Estate of McDonell of Glengarry.A Rental of 1762 reveals the following Kennedy households living on the Estate: -CLARNA and GLASTERBEG:Donald Kennedy,Alexander Kennedy, and Kenneth Kennedy. -KINLOCH and EASTER GLASTER:Archibald Kennedy. -CULROSS:Alexander Kennedy,Angus Kennedy, and John Kennedy. -PITMAGLASTER:Ewan Kennedy. -BALLACHAN:Angus Kennedy and John Kennedy. -GARRIGOULACH:John Kennedy and Ewan Kennedy. -"ARDACHIE":John McKivar,Alexander McDonell,Donald McDonell, and Angus McDonell. Hope this has been of interest, Cheers,Chris.
