The factor would be more responsible for any business to do with the land whilst a Chamberlain would have more responsibility towards the running of the family businesses. Either tasks could be done by either title. The factor would rent the crofts, (tenant farms) collect rents, insure the herds and crops were looked after, sell crops, herds etc. insure feed was purchased or produced, keep business records etc. He could also be called upon to settle minor disputes amongst the tenants, and insure the landlord tenant acts were followed etc. The Chamberlain would make sure the household and family affairs were kept in good order. This would include legal matters referred to appropriate professionals, business details, . book keeping and accounts, staffing, maintenance, and any number of issues that were required by the family and in particular the Lord Lovat himself. If I am not mistaken, and I would appreciate correction if I am, Lord Lovat held the last Private Army in Scotland so either job carried a great deal of responsabilty. My dad worked on the estate in Beuly as a boy around 1925 or so. Dave Hello list, My great grandfather(7) was factor and/or Chamberlain to Lord and Lady Lovat. Does anybody know what the definition of these jobs are? Thanks in advance, Yours aye, Dick Robertson.
