It is an unusual name. Name books for Scotland do not contain it. I have consulted the columnist at the "Scottish Banner" and he had not heard of it. I found two theories as to the origins of this unusual name. One theory is that it is a variant on the name MacBean/MacBain likely adopted after Culloden. As this theory goes the holders of this name were persons who once were members of the clan and changed their name perhaps to avoid persecution. One individual was born in the 1700's in Scotland as William MacBain but on coming to the US changed it to William Cabeen saying that he did so because the clan no longer existed. The second theory is put forth by a little museum in the US which states that the Cabeens were an ancient clan in the territory of Arran. They are said to have had a manor and estates there and that their chief always was known as Constable of the Breffnys. I have a scan of their chi! ef's supposed coat of arms which I will send to interested parties. They argue that MacCabe, McAbe and MacAbe are variant spellings of the old clan name Cabeen. I would appreciate any help in determining the origins of this peculiar Scottish name. I look forward to receiving help in resolving this matter or pointing me towards persons who can help me resolve it. Will Slater Ohio, USA
