I found the following in Chapter 2 - Loch-An-Eilan - at http://www.scottravel.org/rothiemurchus/chapter2.htm : "Several of the Macgregors whom Rob Roy took with him from the south to aid in one of these expeditions remained behind and settled in Rothiemurchus, and became allied with the laird's household. A tombstone preserves their memory in the churchyard." Can anyone tell me what is said on the tombstone please? Is anything else know about the Macgregors who settled there? Regards, Peter South Wales [Scanned by Norton AntiVirus]
Hi Peter; I have a booklet of MIs from this churchyard and there is no such memorial listed. That could mean that it was or is there, but has sunk below ground or become completely unreadable. There is a monument to the Grant's predecessors, the Shaws. Here is what is listed for McGregor: These three are together: - John McGregor resident Cannabole, son John died 15 Oct 1855, age 23 - Alex McGregor, mill of Tromie, wife Isabella McEdward died Boat of Inch 19 Dec 1842, age 32, dau Eglantine Balfour died Mill of Tromie 5 May 1853, age 14 - A McG 1886, wife CC 1891, son J McG 1913 This one is in another location: 1858. Segt John Stewart, Milltown of Aviemore, 9 / 1858, age 67, wife Eliz McGregor 19 July 1857, age 68.
