G'day Listers I am trying to locate the above farm for a friend of mine. I imagine it is about the early 1800's, but not sure. He has no other information. Not much to go on I know, but maybe someone knows of it! I believe Tomnacross is near Dingwall. Cheers..........Bob in Oz.
Have a look at the old maps at www.nls.uk and www.old-maps.co.uk. Another method would be to use the search facilities on the LDS 1881 census discs. But bear in mind that a farm called Easter Mains could be almost anywhere in Scotland. A mains farm is basically a 'home' farm, which could indicate that it was part of a large estate, but then land enclosures meant increasing numbers of tenanted farms at this date. Easter just means 'east'. So with luck you will find a largish farmstead to the east of Tomnacross, near to the 'big house' (assuming there is one). but you may have to cast your net a little wider.
