Dear Carol Did you know that you have access to the International Genealogy Index at Redcliffe Library? Also look in the phone book for Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, they have a family history library (free) and very helpful volunteer librarians. When you go to the public library or the LDS library ask them for help, they will be willing to help. The International Genealogy Index was compiled by the LDS church and is an index of births marriages and some deaths, and is commonly known as the IGI. It is arranged under countries and then states or areas. e.g. Glasgow would come under Lanarkshire I think it was. But your librarian will show you. The names are indexed in alphabetical order, and if the event was recorded in a parish church of some sort it will be bound to be found in the index! After your find your names and note all the details from the index you can order the corresponding film (each parish register or record was microfilmed) and this will cost you a huge $6 for something like 40 days. You have access to the film to look through at your convenience. May I suggest that if you do the above and order the film, you look through the entire film and write down details of all, and I mean all, of the surnames you are looking at. My first attempt I just went to the record I wanted and wrote down what the details were. when I became more into the genealogy I realised that I needed the film again, as there were births etc on that same film for the same family! Also, the LDS is accessible on the internet, although it can be frustrating as it is slooooow at times (so many hits per day slows it down). If you need more tips please feel free to email me, I am in Burpengary. There is an LDS in Buckley Road Burpengary (this road runs paralell to the Bruce Highway and is only a minute off the highway from the Morayfield turnoff. I cannot go and look for you I am sorry, too many committments and no vehicle (it died, boo hoo) otherwise I would be happy to do so. Anyway, happy tree climbing, hope you find much success. Oh, an excellent start for Scottish genealogy is Janet Reakes book, think it is called Tracing your Scottish Ancestors. You might find it in the library also, although I referred to mine 10 million times and was glad I bought it. kind regards Carol Staples
