    1. Norman Urquhart
    2. Billy R. Wilson
    3. I am trying to locate any information on Norman URQUHART. He was born about 1750 in Scotland and died about 1840 in Alabama. He first appears in North Carolina in 1774 when he received a land grant of 150 acres in Cumberland County. His wife was Janet/Jannett Bethune/Beaton (various spellings of her name have been found) whom he married about 1774. She died about 1830 in Alabama. Any additional information on this couple will be greatly appreciated. Who were their parents, when and where were they born, when and how did they sail from Scotland to Colonial America? These are only a few unanswered questions that have plagued this family researcher. Thanks for any information. Billy R. Wilson

    3. Looking for Alexander Bailey, who was born 1719. His father may have been Alexander also. I do not know his mother's maiden name. Alexander was born at a Bailey Castle which was supposed to be 14 miles North of Inverness. It is said they were Presbyterian. He went to lreland where he married Jane Brown. There oldest son Matthew was born there in 1749. They came to America in 1751. Does any one have any information or history on the family. lois@pulsenet.com

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TeC.2ACE/1365.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Karen, there were many many Isabella MacDonalds even at that time there would have been many as isabella was a very popular name with the MacDonalds. Karen why not join the Highland family history society at Inverness, they have many wonderful volunteers working there and will do some research for reasonable fees also at the Inverness library there is the most knowledgable family historian who will also do research for reasonable payment. Highland family history is fraught with complications especially interchangeable names, when one would use their clan name rather that their own. All women were know by their maiden names not their hubands name this kept the clan system of knowing who,s who,s which was of utmost importance to the highland people. Best wishes Ray Gavan

I wonder if the Recorder also made the mistake of leaving out Janet's name,or just got his notes into a bit of a fankle. Incidentally, the name I dentified as Sophie, could well be Jessie or something similiar (you will have a better idea). Cheers,Chris.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TeC.2ACE/1365.1.1 Message Board Post: Ray, I do not know anything about Isabella McDonald at all. A relative of mine had a search done years ago and was told about the inscription but was not told of any other names only that of Charles McFadyen. So you can imagine my surprise when I was told about Isabella. I have been told that the maiden name of married women was used, so with that in mind if its your Isabella and she married a MacDiarmid, my Janet or Jessie`s maiden name doesn`t fit as its Fraser unless mother or daughter had remarried! So I hope you can come up with something, this is the full inscription. Erected by Charles McFadyen, engineer and his wife Jessie Fraser, in memory of their son Charles who died 14 October 1861 aged 9 years. Also of Isabella McDonald, mother of the above Jessie Fraser, who died 7 October 1859 aged 54 years.

I have been looking for the grave of Isabella for many years and have been to Inverness and I cannot beleive that I missed the grave in the old high church, the date is certainly the "right" time for our Isabella,I think in my big library of genealogy somewhere I have the Mi,s for that cemetery. Please let me know if there is a connection as I have done quite a bit of research on the family from Lochaber. Ray Gavan. Sydney

    2. Donald
    3. Karen, that might be her maiden name. People in the Highlands frequently still refer to a woman by her maiden name, whether she's married or not. You might see a monument that reads "Alexander Cameron; his wife, Mary Campbell" -- makes it nice for family historians, at any rate! Sheila in Missouri
