Surnames: Riach,Badenoch Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TeC.2ACE/503.1 Message Board Post: I 've stumbled on your post quite by chance, but I may have some information for you. William Riach was my great grandfather,Jane Garret my great grandmother. Wm was born 1st November 1833 in Bellie,Moray - until I searched,I'd been told he was born in Garmouth,so possibly the family lived there for a time. His parents were Alexander & Margaret Badenoch & so far I've found three siblings of Wm. John,b 28th Oct 1835,Bellie Alexander,b 7th Sept 1837,Thurso,Caithness Margaret Marshall,b 23rd Aug 1840,Thurso,Caithness. Margaret Badenoch's parents were William Badenoch & Margaret Marshall, married 24th Dec 1805,Bellie,Moray & she was christened 26th Feb 1807. William Riach apparently arrived here in NZ in 1866,as his death (he died 21st May,1883) cert gives length of time in NZ as 17 yrs. He & Jane married in Lyttelton on 25th March 1869. They had eight children. I also have a copy of the Riach family tree, but it only goes back as far as William & Jane & some of the information on it is incorrect.

    3. This tidbit regarding the QOCH was kindly sent to me a while back from Ian McKenzie on this list. Sherry The 10th Militia Battalion eventually became the 3rd Battalion, The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. According to the Historical Records of the Cameron Highlanders, Volume VII, Appendix 2, The battalion started out as the Inverness, Banff, Elgin and Nairn Militia Battalion, raised 1 November 1802. In March 1804 it was redesignated the 10th Militia Battalion (the Inverness Militia). It was redesignated the 76th ( Inverness, Banff, Elgin and Nairn) Militia in 1833. It was redesignated 76th Highland Light Infantry Militia in 1855. It became the 2nd(Militia) battalion of the QOCH on 1 July 1881, and was renumbered the 3rd (Militia) battalion on 1 April 1897. Redesignated 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion on 27 February 1908. It was absorbed into the 2nd Battalion in July 1919 and disbanded 30 April 1953.

Where I said "the 'Queen's Own Highlanders; Seaforths and Camerons' - the 72nd (Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders), 78th (Ross-shire Buffs) and 79th (Cameron Highlanders) Regiments of Foot" I should probably have said "the 72nd (Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders), 78th (Ross-shire Buffs) and 79th (Cameron Highlanders) Regiments of Foot later to become the 'Queen's Own Highlanders; Seaforths and Camerons" Of course the Camerons were based at Cameron Barracks, in Inverness, but not until 1886. The Inverness Courier of 15 June 1886 details the arrival of the 1st Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, from Fort George, at Ardesier, to occupy the new Barracks. The 79th (The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders) Regiment of Foot, was raised on 17th Aug 1793 and became the The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders on 1st July 1881. The Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, The Duke of Albany's), formed on 1st July 1881, out of the 72nd (Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders) and the 78th (Ross-shire Buffs), were in turn amalgamated with the Queens' Own Cameron Highlanders on 7th Feb 1961 to form the Queen's Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Camerons). Hope this helps. As you can see the mergers of the Scottish Regiments are not a new thing. However, I too think that "dreadful Blair man " has gone too far. 3. Les, Forgive me as I am not a military man but weren't the Queen's Own only created after WWII or thereabouts when the Camerons and Seaforths were amalgamated? Fort George and the Cameron Barracks were the base for the individual regiments which eventually were combined into the Queens Own, were then amalgamated with the Gordons into the Highlanders and of course now under the dreadful Blair man have been totally abolished into this "thing" which comprises all the Scottish Regiments. The fact that Janet was born at Fort George does not necessarily mean that her father's regiment was stationed there at the time. It is quite probable that he was abroad with his regiment. Fort George was at that time the home of the 'Queen's Own Highlanders; Seaforths and Camerons' - the 72nd (Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders), 78th (Ross-shire Buffs) and 79th (Cameron Highlanders) Regiments of Foot - who were variously in England, Ireland, France and India in the early 1800's.
