    1. Stirlingshire and Dunbartonshire - Appeal to previous FreeCEN volunteers
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TeC.2ACE/1378 Message Board Post: I'd be grateful if anyone who has volunteered for the FreeCEN project in Stirlingshire and Dunbartonshire would please get in touch with me asap. This applies to both volunteers who currently have film for transcription and those who may have volunteered in the past and whose transcriptions have been completed and returned. I also would like to hear from you if you received film from the previous coordinator - even if you have had problems and have been unable to complete any transcription. There is no time limit on the FreeCEN project and you should not worry about any delay in your piece. Equally, you are free to return untranscribed film to me. As the interim county coordinator, I am trying to ensure that things continue as smoothly as possible. I would very much appreciate your help in this. I am sorry to say that it it approaching the point where we may have to start 1841 transcription almost from scratch and allocate pieces to new volunteers. I have been very reluctant to do this as it would devalue the work of other volunteers. For those who have previously contacted me, I apologise for the delay in sorting things out. Best wishes, Lesley Bousbaine

    2. I've come unstuck in going back on my McBain line.Lachlan McBain/McBean, a tailor, who lived at Meadowside, Alvie was born c. 1780 and died June 29, 1857 in Coillintuie, Alvie. He was married to Margaret McIntosh, daughter of James McIntosh and Isobel McBain. Their children were Donald, born 1815, John c. 1816, Elspet, 1818, Isabell, b. 1821, Donald, b. 1821, Margaret, b. 1825, James, b. 1826, Janet b. 1829 and Farquhar, b. 1833. On Lachlan's death certificate his parents were Donald McBain and Elspet McIntyre who had 2 other children, Patrick, born 1781 and Margaret, b. 1784. Does this tie in with anyone else on the list? If so, do they have any clues about Donald and Elspet? Regards, Linda Boyd

There's a family story that claims Wm came out from Scotland with a sister & possibly also a brother, who are believed to have returned to Scotland. A family member has a portrait, said to be of Williams sister & thought to have been painted in Singapore. Not sure how much of this is true, but have seen the painting as it belonged to my Dad for a time. William may also have been a Mason, apparently when he died the Masons provided Jane & the children with a rent free house in Lyttelton. I know very little about Jane & would be glad if you have any information about her.

    3. Have a look at the old maps at www.nls.uk and www.old-maps.co.uk. Another method would be to use the search facilities on the LDS 1881 census discs. But bear in mind that a farm called Easter Mains could be almost anywhere in Scotland. A mains farm is basically a 'home' farm, which could indicate that it was part of a large estate, but then land enclosures meant increasing numbers of tenanted farms at this date. Easter just means 'east'. So with luck you will find a largish farmstead to the east of Tomnacross, near to the 'big house' (assuming there is one). but you may have to cast your net a little wider.
