I must admitt I'm still fairly new at all this cyber stuff. In answer to your question this is what I "think" I know. Granddad came to Canada in 1902 and yes he is a WW1 and WW2 vet. My uncle told me he was wounded at Vimmy Ridge above his knee and he was sent to England. He married Gertrude Pantony (1896)from Kent England in 1917 and they both went back to Canada. He Ranched in Alberta and had three sons, the ranch stuff I know, I've been there. My Uncle Don is still alive and living there. Thanks again from Marion

Also why would he have had to lie to emigrate at that time? I doubt this too. I will note that you are correct in your original post - there was no such person documented born in that year, of that name, in that place. Hence - my response as few eluded registration at that time. I did look a few places here and there and with such a widespread name combination, nothing stood out. I would offer this though - did he serve in WWI - there are more than a few signed up in Canada, of that name, and from Scotland born in the years surrounding your targeted date. A question - where did he live and die in Canada, and what was his occupation, and who was his wife - on that I may perhaps take a quick browse over the next while and see if I might see anything else worthwhile. This is the date his only serviving son gave me (my uncle). But you know he could be wrong. Maybe Granddad told a little fib so he would appear older than he was in order to immigrate to Canada. He also told me his Dad was from Inverness so again I just assumed he knew. Possibly his father had misreprested the fact for some reason. I sure appeciate your help. 3. Hello, I am wondering if the Xmas & New Year has got to me as I cannot figure out what more the LDS, IGI will give you over & above what is now available. I have the above IGI for Scotland purchased a number of years ago from this organisation in Salt Lake City. Also I have read time & again dozens of the Old Parish Register films & numerous films from the 1855 Civil Registers of births, deaths & marriages. Only these last Registers show the fathers occupation or the OPR's in larger places in Scotland will give occupations. I have gleaned occupations only from Census returns in most instances. Again occupations change often many times over a persons lifetime so what benefit could really be gained from this exercise. Personally Scotlandspeople indexing leaves a lot to be desired especially in census returns & it is a pity they never followed the criteria of the first national indexing of 1881 as it seems the English Census are indexed. With so few Scottish surnames & so many family first names following the old naming tradition giving again a small variety of names I would have liked to see the Scottish marriage indexes include the marriage partners surname. I am sure there are many avenues to spread your indexng talents. sincerely, Barbara. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sherry Williamson" <Wiccanpt2@netzero.net> To: <SCT-INVERNESS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 06, 2006 10:45 AM Subject: Volunteers Needed - Freereg Project > Good day (evening) to everyone and Happy New Year! > > I think that we all have used the IGI or scotlandspeople in our research. > For me, both resources have proven invaluable. 1. Re: [SCT-INV] Re: Volunteers Needed - Freereg Project

    3. Hello Barbara, Many thanks for your input. In a nutshell, when the freereg project is completed, you will get other details rather than just names and dates that are currently available on the "other" indexes when you click onto a name. You will know ahead of time, prior to ordering a record from scotlandspeople or a film from the LDS (IGI), what information is recorded on the register for that person. I personally will continue to order images from scotlandspeople to verify information, but it would be so nice to make an informed decision prior. For example, my 4th great, James Calder "tailor in Nairn" (the tailor came later with christenings of his 10 children) was christened to William Calder "weaver in Nairn" in 1785. I was extremely lucky with this record as it listed one of the witnesses as "James Calder, the child's grandfather" (and I know this is rare). This made it easy for me to go back two generations assuming the family originated in Nairn. I found the christening of a William Calder in 1758 to a James Calder "farmer in town" - no mother listed (seems to be the norm for the older records). There were six christenings total in Nairn during the timeframe that I was looking at, all two years apart with the exception of one - three years apart, to a James Calder. In only two instances were mothers mentioned, Catherine McPherson and Katherine McUrich. I had first assumed that the parish priest made an error in recording the last names of the ladies (I could find no marriage of a McPherson to a Calder). I ordered the marriage of Katherine McUrich to James Calder and four christening records to James Calder. I found that there were indeed two James Calder's, one a "farmer in town" and one a "taylor in town". The "farmer" was married to Catherine McPherson which more than likely makes the above William Calder son to this union since William was christened to the "farmer". I still have two more records to order and they may or may not contain the occupation, I am hoping they will. So far, have shelled out almost $90 USD to solve this mystery and still have two more to go. It would be nice to have the information free of charge and immediate without having to travel or wait for the film to come in! When I say informed decision, if the other details were available such as they will be with freereg, I probably would have waited until the end to order the marriage record of McUrich to Calder and instead ordered one of the two christenings that remain. I already had the marriage date of 1752 in the form of an extracted record on the IGI. The marriage record only confirmed they were both of that parish. My logic is that some people may find it inconvenient to order a film through their local LDS or too costly to purchase an image from scotlandspeople. Perhaps the person is homebound or is on a fixed income. My family history has become my passion and I know from personal experience, that it can be costly if you do not follow the LDS route. I see this as a great research tool and it would have been extremely helpful to me if it were available today. My opionion is solely based on my own experience. Kind regards, Sherry > I am wondering if the Xmas & New Year has got to me as I cannot figure out > what more the LDS, IGI will give you over & above what is now available.

    3. Good day (evening) to everyone and Happy New Year! I think that we all have used the IGI or scotlandspeople in our research. For me, both resources have proven invaluable. Wouldn't it be nice to have a "free" index to search that offers more detail than what is currently available on these sites? I know from personal experience, it would have saved me a lot of money on scotlandspeople just by having the occupation of the father listed and freereg will provide this information. Freereg is another look at the OPR's, only this time around, more details are entered. Who knows, we may also discover information that was not posted to the indexes mentioned above (well..........you never know). I have volunteered to be county coordinator for Nairn and am looking for volunteers. All you need is access to a microfiche reader. You can use your local library or purchase one on eBay relatively cheaply as I have done. The microfiche will be sent from the LDS for the county of Nairn. I will then mail a portion to a volunteer. The volunteer would then enter the information from the microfiche into a software program provided by freereg where later it will be transferred for checking. After which will be posted to the site. Although it almost sounds like the wheel is being reinvented, I firmly believe that this will prove to be a better index than what the IGI and scotlandspeople currently have to offer; most importantly, will be free of charge. If anyone would like to learn more, the URL is www.freereg.org.uk There are many parishes available looking for volunteers, including county coordinators. (Carol, our list admin for Moray, is county coordinator for same). Anyone interested in helping with the county of Nairn please contact me, I would love to hear from you!
