    3. I am also related to the MacDONELLs (McDonnells) of Glengarry but almost despair of finding hard facts.I corresponded with Julia in NZ 3 yrs ago & still feel sure there is a connection to be found one day. Does anyone know of Ewen MacDonell, 61st Regiment? He may hold the key. In 1857 my John McDonell (1804 -1862, Catholic) published a letter from the Clan Chief of Clanranald & Glengarry to this Ewen to "prove" his ancestry. John's "Nativeplace" was shown as Keanlochuanagen on immigration to Australia. He was shown as a Shepherd/Overseer. Later info said he was an Innkeeper at Keanlochuanagen, which is just outside Fort Augustus. He married Catherine Anne KENNEDY in Fort A. John's parents were John McDONELL (Shepherd) & Catherine KENNEDY while Ann's were Donald McDONALD (Shepherd) & Elizabeth. John's unmarried brother, Neil (Coachman) & sister, Anne immigrated with him & another brother, Donald arrived later. As you all say -the McDonell, MacDonald & Kennedy families were rife in this neck of the woods. Margaret ____________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TeC.2ACE/1109.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi, again, Julia, So great to hear from you so quickly. I wasn’t sure whether or not you’d pick up the message, given the time between. I have seen MacDonnells (unsure which spelling) from Boleskine in one of my Scottish family tree books, either the Chisholms or MacRaes, but haven’t been able to find the references in either at the moment. When you don’t need to find the information, it’s there all over the place – Murphy’s Law. A ggrand uncle married a Chisholm, but we are descended from the MacRaes of Kintail. It is my ggrand father, Finlay Murchison, s/o Catherine MacRae and Murdoch Murchison, who married Anne (Johanna) MacDonnell, d/o Angus MacDonnell of Glengarry and Mary Gibbs or Gillies. My gggrandfather, Angus, is always referred to as such by our family (in its broadest sense), i.e., ‘… of Glengarry.’ We thought Mary MacDonnell was nee Gillies and have it written somewhere (of course, I haven’t been able to find it), but Anne’s death certificate states that her mother’s last name was Gibbs. I’m not! actually convinced that this is the case, but if Anne’s husband, Finlay, gave the information, then it is more than likely correct. With regard to the names of the graveyards, I’m not sure what the ‘old’ one is called, but wondered if it was Kildonan. I’ve had a quick look on the net, but got nowhere this time. I’ll be getting in touch with the Glengarry Info centre when it’s open again – it’s so annoying that they all close for the winter. I prefer to be in the UK when it is winter to avoid the crowds. I was under the impression that Munerigie was the name of the farm on the hill above the ‘old’ graveyard. We had some difficulty finding the ‘old’ graveyard (as opposed to the ‘new’ one further back on the A87) and had to phone our host a couple of times for more and more directions until we eventually did find it. This was in Jan, this year. The three of us (my 2 kids and I) were quite intrigued with the graveyard, and my son took quite a few photos, but we were pushed for time and could only be there for about an hour. This was the same situation with Kilfinnan. We don’t know who of our ancestors is buried in either/both graveyards (there is also another one we didn’t visit, called something like Tonacarry, I think), but if the overwhelming love I felt at the ‘old’ one is anything to go by, Mary (or other female ancestors) is definitely buried there and I think (i.e., feel) she’s a Gillies (probably wrong though). This is about as far as we’ve come in our search of our MacDonnells, though there is lots of information about the clan out there. Angus and Mary had at least 4 children, 3 of whom came to NZ, I don’t know about the 4th. Euan seems to have been the oldest and (according to the shipping records) at the time of travelling to NZ in 1875 was 28, his wife was 29, and his sister, Anne (Johanna) was 23. Another sister, Ellen, married Lynch in Waikaia, NZ, but we don’t know when this occurred. It just occurs to me to get a copy of her marriage certificate if she married after 1880 as this should show her mother’s full name (here’s hoping). Anne and Finlay married in 1876, which was before the inclusion of parents’ names was required on these certificates. The email address is misleading. I work for Ngäi Tahu, but have no Mäori ancestry. I do have strong links, though, through the marriage of one of my siblings to a Ngäi Tahu. They got married when I was quite young and I’ve always been involved with the whänau. Our ancestry is purely UK - Scottish, Irish, Cornish and English. We still don’t know if we’re mostly Scottish or mostly English. The balance will be tipped when we discover whether Joseph Smith, an ancestor, married an English or Scottish woman. Their daughter, a great grandmother of ours, was born in Edinburgh and we’re hoping her mother was Scottish. We’re assuming Joseph was English, as he was a sergeant in the Imperial army. Quite a bit of research to do, yet. Bye for now, Anne

I do not know if the uncle was Kennedy or McDonnell. I am assuming DAK's family travelled with him, but I do not know their locations in either Scotland or Canada. They were a family of Lumbermen/Scalers. They were Highland Catholic.... This family found in the 1841 Census in Kilmonivaig (seen below) is the closest match I have found to date, matching Donald Alexander's date of birth and showing the same names for his parents, aunt and siblings as are known living in Canada and later, after 1870, in USA/Wisconsin. Is there any way to trace this family prior to the 1841 Census in Scotland, or in the 1851 Census to see if they are still in Scotland then, or gone? Or where they may have located on arrival in Canada? 2. The original information I received about my McDonells came first from a letter to Clan Fraser Society of Canada from an old lady in her eighties in 1980s from NZ. My McDonells and Frasers moved around too. My William Fraser bc 1820 , son of William Fraser and Mary McDonell lived in Boleskine/Dores as did some of his other siblings. I have had little luck with finding more than that on Mary McDonell of Bunioch ( Invergarry). Would you have come across her grave I wonder? The last two years when I was back I have been around the Northern part of the Loch graveyards. This year I hope to venture to around Glen Garry area. Karen Donald Malaysia

The cemetery was to have been flooded in the 1940s when a kind sole from England collated the graves left standing and one of my brothers picked up a copy from the small museum dedicated to mainly the MacDonnells in Invergarry. My gggrandma Anne or Annie was a McDonnell. She was born in Boleskine but so were some buried near her came also from Leek also in Boleskine so iI presume they were quite closely related. My gggrandfather ewen came from the Glengarry part of Kilmonivaig so around Invergarry but I'm not sure where. his sister Anne McDonald is also buried at Munerigie but her stone no longer stands. I researched those that still stood on Scotlands People and many were Gillies and McDonells [McDonnells]and McDonalds but as you saw many are now in ruins. Funnily enough my lot were tied up in other ways. One of Ewen and Annie's other son's John , married the girl next door in Market Hill, Fort Augustus , Mary McDonell, and both her father Donald and I think her Mum was Mary too were McDonells.John and Mary had a daughter Johanna Also their son Donald , my ggrandfather left for Australia with his wife Jane Lamont and their 2 young children, Margaret and Ewen [ my grandfather] in 1864 after his Dad's death.Unfortunately Jane died of ovarian cancer but another relative in Bendigo,Victoria ,Anne McDonald ,a nurse and the daughter of Samuel McDonald and Christina Gillies fostered Annie Jane , their youngest daughter. McDonald and McDonnell were interchangeable. The IGI lists the 2 , Ewen and Anne as both McDonells in a couple of their childrens births. Our family was Catholic was yours also. I'd love to hear more, I know they were very proud of their McDonell link and I'd love to know more of who your relatives were in the Munerigie cemetery. As I said I have many records that don't make complete sense Kind regards, Julia I see you are also of Ngai Tahu descent . We were up in the Hokianga today and i hope your Waitangi day passes well. This is the site of the 15th MacDonnell chief's graveyard, mentioned in the previous email. As with John in 2005, I also have photos of both graveyards. If you'd like a photo or two, just let me know. Also, I see you're a New Zealander as am I. My sister and I have been doing our ancestry for a few years now. Our great grandmother, Johanna (Anne) MacDonnell, came to NZ with some of her siblings in about 1862. One of her brothers was Ewen MacDonnell who also had his wife with him and was about 28 years old at the time. He became a police chief at Green Island, Dunedin. One, referred to as the old graveyard, is on the road to Skye (the A 87, I think). The directions are that you go along this road, passing the dam and 'new' graveyard on the left (unsure, now, which is passed first) and continue a until you come to a road to the right on a bend that has on one of the signs 'Munerigie' (sounds a bit like Menalagy). The 'old graveyard' is to the right, you can’t miss it. MacDonnells and Gillies (as well as others) are buried there. These are also my people - we are possibly distantly related. The other MacDonnell graveyard (also my people) is at Kilfinnan. To get to this, take the road to Fort William (A 82) passing the Well of the 7 Heads. Continue along this road and take a right-hand turn just past the 'cycle track'. I think this road has a 'Kilfinnan' signpost. If you haven't turned right and come to the swing bridge,! you've gone too far. To get to the Kilfinnan graveyard, you have to go through a farm on the left of the road, crossing a river just before this. It’s about 10-15 mins drive from the signpost. The 15th Chief, Alisdair Ruadh Macdonnell, the subject of Raeburn's painting, is buried there, but the graveyard is all quite unkempt. I hope this information is of some use to you. Best wishes, Anne H
