Order the film of the parish registers for the early 19th century for Nairn at your nearest LDS centre, and take time to go through them carefully looking for a mention of Alexander McIntosh, saddler. Alternatively, all Alexander McIntoshes, note the children and godparents -- note godparents for the Grant children too and you may be able to find an outline of your family. I do hope you will tell us the results if you do this! Best wishes.

    1. McIntosh/Mackintosh & Grant - Inverness/Nairn, Scotland & England
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: McIntosh, Grant, Colston, Smith Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TeC.2ACE/1413 Message Board Post: Hello all, I need a little help to make a connection and locate some parents. I have an Alexander MCINTOSH born in Scotland living in London, England in 1861 & 1871. It doesn't say where he is born other than Scotland. He was married twice that I know of. His marriage certificate says his father is Alexander McIntosh (occp. Saddler). The verbal record of the family says Alexander came from Nairn/Inverness. Alexander had two girls with his first wife Elizabeth SMITH. A Rachel McIntosh and an Elizabeth McIntosh, both born in London. Alexander MCINTOSH was a BAKER. Alexander had two children with his second wife Elizabeth COLSTON, a Lydia Alice and John Grant. Elizabeth McIntosh (nee COLSTON) was a widow in 1881. The census records quote Alexander McIntosh's birth in 1861 as c. 1833, and in 1871 as c. 1835. He died in January of 1874, and his age is noted as 38 (c. 1836) on the death certificate. In 1881 his daughter Rachel McIntosh from his first marriage was residing with Alexander and Jessie GRANT and family in Suffolk, England, and Rachel is noted as NIECE. I found a record of a marriage for an Alexander GRANT and Jessie MACKINTOSH on June 1, 1849 in Nairn, along with christenings of all of their children in Nairn. I have also found this GRANT family in the 1861 and 1871 census living at 66/68 High Street in Nairn, Scotland. Alexander GRANT was noted as a Baker. Jessie GRANT (nee McIntosh) birth is noted as c. 1825 in Inverness in both the 1861 & 1871 Scottish census, and as c. 1827 in the 1881 British census, but her place of birth still says Inverness. I'm trying to find the parent's of Alexander and Jessie MCINTOSH. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TeC.2ACE/1411.1.1.2 Message Board Post: Hi Joan, The one family remaining at Ardochy in the 1851 Census is as follows: -Flora McDONELL or GRANT,head of household, widow, age 71. -Allan GRANT,son,unm,34. -Allan GRANT,grandson,13. -Ann GRANT,daughter,unm.,36. Ardochy,as far as I can ascertain, lay on the south side of Loch Garry, between Greenfield and Laddy. On modern maps there is a house(?)in the middle of the forest clearing, which is called "South Ardachy".I believe this is where the farm settlement stood,or was close by.As Jane has suggested, watch you don't get it confused with a farm called Ardachy/Ardochy which is just outside Fort Augustus. To confuse things even further, there is a farm called Ardachvie a few miles away. I think you are right in saying that a Mr Ellice owned the estate that Ardochy stood on,but I don't really know anything about his affairs.Until the mid 1820s,I believe that Ardochy was rented/owned by a wealthy sheep farmer called Gillespie, whose family originated from the south of Scotland. Your Kennedys were one of a large number of an extended tribe,of approx.20 households, which stretched from the shores of Loch Garry, round the side of Loch Lochy as far as Clunes. In the 18th century they had a reputation for lawlessness, and were frequently involved in sheep and cattle theft. Here are a few cases I have come across, for instance: -1745.Eight Kennedy men from the neighbourhood were declared Outlaws, when they failed to appear at Court in Inverness on charges of armed theft and robbery. -1749.Kenneth dhu Kennedy,Laggan, habitual thief, was hung at Inverness. -1753.John breck Kennedy,a notorious thief and Army deserter, was hung at Inverlochy for cattle theft. -1760.John McIan bain Kennedy,Glasterbeg, was banished for life for horse and cow stealing. -1764.Banished for 14 years for cattle theft - Duncan dow Kennedy, son of Angus ban,Killinan. -1778.Hainy Kennedy,Lagganachadrome, declared insane and imprisoned at Inverness for the murder of her son. -1780.Angus Kennedy imprisoned for the habitual theft of cattle and money. On the night of his imprisonment, his friends took revenge on the Trial witnesses by slitting the bellies of their cows. -1782.Angus bain Kennedy,John bain Kennedy,John roy Kennedy, and Archibald bain Kennedy, all of Shian, declared Outlaws for not appearing at their Trial in Inverness. -1783.Ronald dow Kennedy,Shian, charged with theft and reset, along with the previously mentioned Angus bain Kennedy(his brother),John roy Kennedy, John buie Kennedy, and Archibald buie Kennedy. The same year,Katherine Kennedy, wife of Angus bain, and Katherine McDonnell, wife of his brother John bain, were found guilty of assaulting a Sheriff Officer who was trying to arrest their servant. How grandad Alexander,80 in the 1841 Census, relates to any of these miscreants is difficult to say,but I am sure there will be some sort of relationship. At this period in the 18th century,Ardochy and neighbourhood was still part of the Estate of McDonell of Glengarry.A Rental of 1762 reveals the following Kennedy households living on the Estate: -CLARNA and GLASTERBEG:Donald Kennedy,Alexander Kennedy, and Kenneth Kennedy. -KINLOCH and EASTER GLASTER:Archibald Kennedy. -CULROSS:Alexander Kennedy,Angus Kennedy, and John Kennedy. -PITMAGLASTER:Ewan Kennedy. -BALLACHAN:Angus Kennedy and John Kennedy. -GARRIGOULACH:John Kennedy and Ewan Kennedy. -"ARDACHIE":John McKivar,Alexander McDonell,Donald McDonell, and Angus McDonell. Hope this has been of interest, Cheers,Chris.

Thank you so much for the look-up, for it lends another factor to the possibility that this is my family. I will look into the Catholic records. I hadn't known they had been kept.... As well, knowing that all but one family departs, offers a possibility that the 6 families may have travelled together. Might help in the search on the Canada side? I am wondering if you might recall which family remained in Ardochy, or if they may be a new family residing there in 1851? As well, I am reading in an article published by the Forest Commission on 19 August 2005 (which ironically is my Kennedy mother's birthday), of the adjacent village of Dangean, in the 1841 Census spelled Dangain. Recently discovered deep in the Glengarry Forest, and now preserved and open to the public to visit there. In my research of available maps, online, it seems that Ardochy village also disappeared. References to it being part of the estate of Edward Ellice, I see, but I have still to find a location for it. Ardochy Hunting Lodge possibly on the Loch Garry? If you, or any others might have this information, I would be most grateful. Best Regards, Joan

I am not able to give you much assistance over their origins prior to 1841,but the Records of the local Catholic Church are held (copies) at the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh, and there should be Births and Marriages recorded from circa 1820. I think your best bet is to go the ScotlandsPeople website (pay to view),and search out George's Birth Certificate - it shouldn't be too difficult.Culloden seems to be stretched out over the Districts of Croy,Daviot and Dunlichty,Petty, and Inverness Town.Once you've found the Certificate, that should give you sufficient info to trace the Marriage Certificate. Good luck, Chris.
