    1. [SCT-INV-L] More Greigs
    2. Geoff Carse
    3. JJDILL1@aol.com wrote I am hoping someone will have information on this John Greig. This is my gggrandfather. This is the only information I have. John Greig, Pvt. of British 79th Regiment (Queens Own Cameron Highlanders) and wife Mary died in the cholera outbreak in Toronto, Canada in 1834, leaving my ggrandfather an orphan. In the family bible it say he was born in Inverness SCT. no birth date. I am at a dead end on this. - -------------------------- I am also seeking Greig ancestors Andrew Greig born abt 1802 Gask, Perthshire, married Marion Arbuckle born 1800 North Uist, Inverness, Scotland in 1829 in North Uist, Inverness, Scotland. They had 4 childrem William b1830, James b 1832, Ann b1833, and Andrew b1843, William, my gg grandfather and Andrew came to Australia and settled in the latter part of the 19th century. The ancestory of the Arbuckles is shared with Lorraine another list member so is well researched however the ancestry of Andrew Greig is reallly stalled. Andrew was a schoolteacher. It seems that my Andrew and the John Greig listed by JJDILL1 were contemporaries in Inverness so I have taken the chance to list him as well. Geoff Carse Brisbane

    3. CAN ALL OF YOU OUT THERE TELL ME WHAT NOVA SCOTIA MEANS, WHO NAMED IT, AND WHEN ???? PALMER FRASER DONALD THOMPSON Finally a question that I can definately answer!!!! I'll try to keep it brief - Nova Scotia means - New Scotland - it was named by Sir William Alexander in the very early 1600's (about 1625)......it was previously named "Acadia" which had been tossed from France to England to Boston then back to France in 1667 and captured again by New England in 1690, restored to France, captured again by the English in 1710 and this time it was kept.....although there had been many battles since for the control between the English, French and the original inhabitants - the MicMac Indians!!! Hope this is helpful! Bryan Keddy Halifax, N.S.

    3. Nova Scotia (New Scotland) was, in effect, 'created' by a Royal Charter of James VI (and I) in 1621. For an account of the founding of NS see the web site: http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Heritage/FSCNS/Scots_NS/New_Scotland/Scotland_New_Scotland_Menstrie.html Listers might also be interested in a new book which deals with the relationship between Scotland and Nova Scotia: "Myth, Migration and the Making of Memory: Scotia and Nova Scotia c. 1700-1990" edited by Marjory Harper and Michael E Vance, (Halifax, NS: Fernwood Publishing & Edinburgh: John Donald Publishers.) 1. [SCT-INV-L] Trip to Scotland
    2. Robert Fraser Andrews
    3. Dear Friend, I just returned from Scotland late last night. The time there went quite fast. The weather was mostly liquid sunshine, but that is Scotland is it not? I spent two days in Edinburgh with family and then off to The Highlands. It is always nice to see that sign "Welcome to The Highlands". Like a typical American I poked around the grave yards looking for kin. A special time for me is my visits to Culloden Moor. It is a sad place, but a place of remembrance. I have posted a picture I took late afternoon on Good Friday. After taking the picture I stood the wee cross up against the stone. It had the white flower, a thistle, and a bit of tartan attached to it. All very nice indeed. The picture is posted at the top of the opening page of thefrasers.com. In that last two years Inverness has grown steadily. The sheep are being replaced by Highlanders. At least this second clearance will not involve Highlanders. I took some more pictures, and will post them when they get back from the developers. My very best to you all. Bob http://www.thefrasers.com This site is dedicated to all people of the name Fraser!! 1. [SCT-INV-L] McLean of Kilmorack
    2. We're researching our McLean family, who arrived in Nova Scotia from Kilmorack in 1801 on the ship "The Sarah". We don't know anything about their history in Scotland and would like to find out more. Here's what it says on the passenger list: William MacLean, farmer; Margaret MacLean, spinster Don McLean, Laborer; Mary McLean, spinster Kath. McLean John McLean (10) William McLean (8) These are the only McLeans listed, and there were lots of Williams, Donalds, and Johns in our family tree. The 8 year old boy, William, was my great great great grandfather. We don't know if Donald was his father or William. We've tracked the family to the boat, but now would like to proceed and find out which parish they were from exactly and any historical info. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks, Rob McLean

    1. [SCT-INV-L] Alexander GEDDIE, James Donald (or Daniel) GEDDIE, Isabella/Catherine McPHAIL
    2. Jim Mackay
    3. Seeking desparately, on behalf of American cousins, to trace the following who were said to have been born in Scotland: Alexander GEDDIE stated father of: James Donald (or Daniel - apparently either translation from the Gaelic is acceptable) GEDDIE born c. 1755 and his wife: Catherine (Cathrin etc) (and/or) Isabella McPHAIL (or similar sounding variation - eg McFail) The latter two travelled to the Cape Fear, North Carolina, according to various books, on the same ship in 1772 and married in North Carolina some time before: "Jan 4, 1795 James GEDIE (note spelling) and spouse Cathrine (note spelling) Mcphaile - son baptzd Dugald" and "James Gadie and Cathrin Macphaile" had a daughter baptized named Sarah Apr 9 1797. They were also said to have been accompanied by Catherine/Isabella's brothers Dugald and Daniel McPhail Grateful for any traces on these people or similar names. The various sources suggest that they were born in various places - Argyll, Ross and Cromarty, Jura Islay, Fife, Moray or surrounding districts. But none of the sources point to confirmed places or dates of birth and some, like the works listed below, are almost certainly written on hearsay. Unfortunately they do not give a clue as to which ship was involved: Source Name : DOBSON, DAVID. Scots on the Chesapeake, 1607-1830. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1992 and WHYTE, DONALD. A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to the USA. Vol. 1. Baltimore: Magna Carta Book Co., 1972. Jim Mackay jimmackay@x-stream.co.uk
