Can anyone tell me where the dividing line between Bracadale and Strath is on the west coast of Skye. In other words, which communities would be in Strath and which in Bracadale? Marion Markham
Hi, Could someone please confirm that the Isle of Eigg is in Inverness county? I am researching McIsaacs from the Isle of Eigg. Please contact me if you share the same interest. -Mary Ellen Moulton, Plaistow, New Hampshire, USA
I'm sorry - I must have forgot to put the URL in my message.... I have just finished the 1861 Census for Fort William - and have placed it online with the 1841 census.....please note that I have removed the search engine as I have found that it wasn't working properly....and didn't want anyone to assume that because they put a name in and zero results were shown not to bother to look any further.....also I haven't added a list of area's to the top of each page (as in the 1841 census) as I don't think it was really helping - but if I get enough people reply that it would help then I'll spend the time to put it on..... Thanks Donald for the advise on using XL search - I tried it using my 2000 Office finder and believe that I found my gg grandmother & g grandmother at Stronaba in the 1841 census.... My next goal will be to get the 1881 Ft. William census online - and believe that I should be able to by the end of this week.....just wish I had something like this for all of Inverness-shire - but hopefully one area at a time...... Hoping you have a wonderful week, and Happy Hunting!!! Bryan Keddy Halifax, N.S.
This is really great information Bryan. Many thanks. Can anyone very kindly tell me the name of the village that Fort William itself went by in 1841? Many thanks, Jane
Bryan You are deserving the thanks of many for your postings of the 1841 Census material and I and many others are looking forward to your continuing efforts. Thank you. You mention that you have incorporated a search mechanism (which I have not looked at yet) but in case anyone is interested there is a fairly simple way if you also have a spreadsheet such as Excel or Lotus installed on your machine. I was faced with searching for Angus Cameron and his wife Margaret (both common names) without knowing more than Angus was born in Fort William about 1812. Which page to look at???. The parish names were all strange to me and I tried by random search, page 3 then 5 then 1 - hard work!. Bright idea - highlight the text from top to bottom of page, copy (to clipboard), open Spreadsheet (I use Excel) and paste from clipboard to the first cell. It actually finishes up as multiple lines - all info in first column. Then use the find function built into the spreadsheet. I decided to use page 2 for this technique My search found about 15 Angus Camerons before I came to 'mine' in Mall - Moy. It gave me a real buzz. So some others may find this an alternative to a search facility on the site. It does have the advantage that the material can be manipulated to produce an extract for supporting ones data. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

I am sorry listowner to post this to the list but have to disagree with R. McInnes. Yesterday I received an email from someone on another list, someone I knew, it was an attachment for a photo note it had no .vbs after it, being cautious I wrote to see if he had sent the photo (yes it came from his address) he sent me an urgent urgent message saying no he hadn't sent it. It was sent to 3 other people at the same time, I only hope they did not open it. So you don't have to have .vbs tacked on the end of the attachment, please check any attachment with the person who sent them before opening them. Laraine
Dear Friend, I have posted some pictures I took in Scotland Late last month. Just as soon as I can remember how to get the labels correct I will get them labeled. The pictures at Culloden were taken on Good Friday. The remainder were taken during the next two days. The last picture was taken just before dark on Easter. Then the liquid sunshine came in for the remainder of the trip. I have a few more coming back from the developers. Laraine, Thanks for letting us know. It was certainly lucky you checked with the sender! This sounds like yet another new development on everything I've read so far. What was the file ending? Hello Everyone: Another puzzle once again. On the 1841 Census, I have the following people living with Flora (MacLeod) Arbuckle at Balmartin or Balelone William McKenzie age 12 (b.abt 1828/29) Murdoch McKenzie age 8 (b.abt 1832/33) With Flora's son Donald in 1841 in Kilpheader there is Alexander McKenzie age 20 (b.abt 1820/21) On the 1851 Census there are no McKenzie's with Flora and she did die in 1852. With her son Donald there are Alexander McKenzie age 48 (b.abt 1802/03) brother-in-law builder - born Stornoway Murdoch McKenzie age 17 (b.abt 1833/34) nephew builder apprentice Alexander McKenzie age 15 (b.abt 1835/36) nephew Scholar Donald left for Canada abt 1854/55 and I am now trying to find what happened to the McKenzie's and the relationship. If anyone has these people in their research I would be very happy to discuss with them. Lorraine Ottawa, Canada
Hello Everyone This information supplied by Colin Hinson (Yorksgen) One of the problems with the latest viruses is that whilst written in Visual Basic Script, it is not obvious to everyone that the file has a ".vbs" extension, as the file is named something like "XXXXXXLOVEYOU.jpg.vbs". By default, Windows has the "hide file extensions for known file types" enabled, ie. the known file type extensions are *not* displayed. This gives the appearance of the above file name to be "XXXXXXLOVEYOU.jpg", and a .jpg file would not be a danger, as opening it would simply display it and not execute it. In order to avoid this problem you need to set up the options in Windows Explorer or My Computer to turn the extensions on, and while you're there, turn the other details on too: In Windows Explorer or My Computer, go to "View", then "Folder options", then click on the "View" tab, and you are presented with a window which says at the top "Files and Folders". In this window, it is important that under "Hidden files" the "Show all files" button is selected, and that the "Hide file names for known file types" is *not ticked*. I personally have the "Allow all uppercase names" ticked, as this helps with case sensitive stuff such as web sites. Select the remaining items as you want them to be. In theory and Windows allowing, you should now be able to see all file names complete. If you receive an attachment which contains a ".vbs" file then delete it immediately. Best regards Andrew Riding
Hello Listers, I am not sure if my request is strictly relevant to the list, but I would be grateful for any leads. Has anyone ever heard of Sir William Mackinnon 1823- 1893, Knight founder of the British Eat Africa Co?? Regards Nick Beaton

Could > you tell me what this relates to? > > Thanks in advance > jack stead Hi Jack, et all.... I presume others may have the same question so I am posting this message to the list as well - the N & Y are in the column "Birthplace" so my assumption is it stands for No and Yes as to being born is the area shown......to bad they didn't take the time to show where each was born - but I believe it's shown in the 1861 census for the area..... Now, I've also have inquries about finding the 1841 census on the Scotland Glens site - I had to split the cover page into two pages a little while ago as it was getting too big for my server - so I put all the Glenurquhart and Glenmoriston information on the first page - and all the Inverness-shire related information on the second - you should find the larger link to it at the bottom of the page (this is where the 1841 Fort William Census information is located)..... The best anti virus measure for these particular viruses is not opening any attachment which has .vbs at the end of the file name unless you are expecting .vbs file, you know what it is and you are sure it was sent to you by the person whose name appears on the email. .vbs is a term operating system software reads as "run this computer programme which is a software script written in the visual basic programming language". It's running the script which does the damage. It's a script which tells your computer's operating system to permanently delete lots of files stored on the hard drive.
