    1. [SCT-INV-L] Military photographs
    2. Roger Capewell
    3. Hello everyone, in September last year I started to build a free web site dedicated to identifying military photographs in an attempt to repay some of the generous help that I have received from genealogists generally, and Rootsweb list owners and listers in particular. The site has been set up to offer free help to those with military ancestors (or living family members) from all corners of the British Isles (and its war time allies). Many of us are lucky enough to own treasured photographs of groups or single portraits of military personnel of the W.W.1 and W.W2 era and with luck, earlier "gems" of this sort. How many times have you and your family looked at these wonderful old photographs and wondered who your ancestors comrades were ? What Regiment etc. did they belong to? When and where the photograph was taken ? 'Military Images' is set up to offer "on line" pages to display these photographs in the hope that other site visitors can help with identification and general research assistance. Perhaps you have in your possession photographs that you can scan that are a partial or complete mystery ? Perhaps (like me) you can identify your own relative/s within the group but none of his/her comrades? Perhaps some of these "on line" unknown servicemen are lost relatives or people that may have passed on information about your ancestors military career to their families. The web site now contains this type of material and other information and links etc. As of today (31st of May 2000), the site holds photo/scans of some 2,819 UNIDENTIFIED INDIVIDUALS, plus many more that only the barest facts are known. There is also, a list of 812 transcribed names from War Memorials etc. (many of the memorials have been photographed and these scans are "on site"). Please do bear in mind that in WW1 in particular, where a soldier was living at the time of his volunteering or conscription often had no bearing on which Regiment or unit etc. he was posted to. So for example, a soldier who perhaps volunteered or was conscripted in Yorkshire could be posted to a Scottish Regiment. Please send any enquiries or comments directly to me and not to the owner of this list. Thank you for reading this. Good luck and good hunting ! >From Roger Capewell, in Derbyshire, England. rojanne@capefam.freeserve.co.uk 'Military Images' Web Site at :- Http://www.capefam.freeserve.co.uk/militaryimages.htm Researching CAPEWELL/CAPWELL anywhere, any time.

    2. Pam Atkinson
    3. Wonder if anyone can suggest a different method of approach for me. My gr-gr-gr grandfather William GRANT and wife Christian McGREGOR lived and brought up family in Cromdale around the 1790's when my gr-gr grandfather David GRANT was born in 1794. l have searched parish records for their marriage long ago but apparently the church was burnt down early in 1790's thus l can go back no further. Have also searched through FAMILYSEARCH using custom search and batch numbers and it certainly seems nothing there. Is there an alternative source l could have tried? Can anyone tell me what size Cromdale would have been during this period? l know Cromdale at this period was part of Inverness. Thank you all. On a warm sunny winters day Pamela Atkinson New Zealand

    2. A & C DODS
    3. Hello from the W.Aust. Most of my research is for the Fishing families of PETTY & ARDERSIER. They didn't stay put depending on the fish and some of my family went over to Burghead. Have Monument Inscriptions been written for these area's as yet. I would love to be able to buy a book or fiche. When there was so many Main, Davidson and Ralph and others with the same christian names. I quess for some of the graves it would be already to late. In 95 I went to Burghead and there was a very old cemetery there in the town plus a very old Kirton at Hopeman. Does anyone know if they have been done or if there are plans. I have look at the Inverness East MI book so many times now. I will have to buy one of my own as the one in Perth at our genealogy society has been kept by a library member, which is a shame. bye Chris Dods Perth Western Australia

    2. Bryan Keddy
    3. As I had promised a couple of days ago - here is the list of Mc/MacLeans from the four volumes of Cemetery Inscriptions from the South Shore of Nova Scotia.....I realize that there's not too many listed here as most stayed in the Pictou and northern shoreline area, but a few must have migrated to the southern part of N.S..... For your information over 170 headstones at Bridgewater Brookside Cemetery were badly damaged last month and I have set up a webpage on this - yet we are still trying to get a listing of all the names from the damaged headstones.... http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ked1/brooksidedist.html This is all that I have - so please don't ask for any more information of the lineages - as I really don't have it...... 3. G'day Listers. My first posting to this list, and would like to find out more about James and Christina McKENZIE and their children, Eliza and Caroline, who emigrated to Australia on the John Davies in 1852. From the Disposal List of that ship, they came from Inverness, and James was an Agricultural Labourer. John would have been born about 1824 and Christina (LAWSON) was born about 1827. Any information would be greatfully received. Cheers, Bob McKenzie Australia mck@datafast.net.au

    1. [SCT-INV-L] RE: Kilmuir Parish Records
    2. The Knights
    3. Debbie, I don't have the information you are seeking, but I'm very interested in the name "JOHN MURRAY". I'm researching Hendersons, Nicolsons, Jacobs, and McKinnons on Skye. My ggg-grandmother's name was Sophia (M.S. NICOLSON) JACOBS who was born in Kilmuir on Skye about 1827. She was married to Thomas JACOBS who evidently was a mariner in the Royal Marines (possibly from England). They had one child that I know of named Ann JACOBS who married my g-grandfather John Henderson in Govan, Lanarkshire in 1872. To get back to my connection to your research. Sophia (Nicolson) JACOBS died on Wentworth Street in Portree on 9-10-1886. According to her death record, her son John MURRAY was present at and registered the death. We don't have any MURRAYS in our family (that we know of) so I'm assuming this is a child by a relationship we don't know of yet. I also found on the 1881 census of Portree, a John MURRAY (presumably the same one), unmarried, age 20, born in Glasgow living with the Henderson family at 17 Wentworth Street in Portree. The whole family consists of: John Henderson, 37 Ann (Jacobs) Henderson 31 Joan (Johanna Jacobs) Henderson, 13 (daughter of Ann by a previous relationship) Sophia Henderson, 6 Donald Henderson, 4 Thomas Henderson, 18 mos. Sophia Jacobs, widow, 42 (mother-in-law) John Murray, unmarried, 20 (brother-in-law) There seems to have been a lot of hanky-panky going on in this family and I haven't straightened it all out yet, but if my John Murray has any connection with your John Murray, I sure would like to know. My hope is perhaps a cousin, uncle or anything. Would love to hear from you. Pam in Illinois xcaliber@mc.net Researching in: Scotland - Henderson, McGilvray, Jacobs, Nicolson, MacKinnon Ireland - Doherty Sweden - Harte, Peterson, Nillson, Johnson England - Baldwin, Holden, Clements Hi everyone, John MURRAY is listed as 4 months old in the 1881 census with his parents. He was born in Kilmuir, Skye. Does anyone have access to the parish record film/fiche that might be able to check for his christening or birth date? Many thanks, Debbie in B.C.

Hi Debbie, 1880 comes under 'Civil Registration' for Scotland not parish records. If John is 4 months old he was likely born Nov-Dec. 1880. Salt Lake doesn't have the birth, marr. death films for 1880. Just 1855 to 75 + 1881 and 1891. You would have to get someone to look up the birth in Edinburgh. You might try for a sibling born abt. 1875 (if there was one) or another birth in 1881 (not likely) or 1891, to find his parents names and place of marriage. Do you have the parents marriage cert? It would be best to go to your Latter Day Saints Fam. Hist. centre to see if they can help you. Sometimes they have researchers names on file who will look up events at Edin. for a fee. regards.
