    2. Dear Jane, I do not have any more information than I reported from the LDS film. I way looking for a John McIntosh from Moy & Dalarossie, Inverness and decided to copy all of the John McIntosh information. Too bad the John McIntosh from St. Cuthbert was a shoemaker and not a bookseller. The ages are very close. I was most interested in your John McIntosh's family information. I married a Laidlaw whose ancestors were from St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh. Regards, Bob

    3. I too am seeking connections for Nicolson's from the Isle of Skye. The furthest back my information goes is to Donald Nicolson and Mary Lamont (Lamond) in the Bernisdale, Snizort Parish, Isle of Skye. They had at least three children in the 1830s, who all appear in the 1851 Census for Bernisdale along with their widowed mother. The entry consisted of - Mary Nicolson, head, widow, aged 59 Alexander, son, 24 Donald, son, 19 Marion, daughter 16 Would appreciate contact if this connects with anyone's research. I have just received my ggg grandmother Mary BURGESS(nee GRANT) death cert. which gives my gggg grandparents as: Anne GRANT, domestic servant, Reputed father, Charles Duncan GRANT, Chelsea pensioner. Mary was illegitimate. 1. How soon after a birth was the lassie hauled before the Kirk. 2. If Charles was a Chelsea pensioner, how do I find out what regiment he was with. Any help really appreciated and my apologies if you are on the 2 lists I have sent this too. Thank you, Laraine Dyer

    3. Greetings from Nova Scotia! I am researching my daughter-in-laws family so that I may one day have some family history to pass on to my wonderful grandchildren. Her family are Fraser's of Stellarton,N.S. and my research has led me to her great-grandfather Ronald Duncan Fraser who married a Colin Chisholm of Antigonish County, N.S., son of Valentine Chisholm born c 1803 in Scotland. Valentine emigrated to Canada sometime after the 1844 time frame. He had two children born in Scotland, James c 1831 and Isabella born c 1844. What I need now is to find out where he emigrated from and what his wife's name was and his parent's names and any other ancestors I can find. They were of the Roman Catholic faith and as near as I can figure out all the Roman Catholic Scots emigrated from the Inverness County area, probably Strathglass (or so I have been told). Would anybody be able to help a poor old Grammy out here!! LOL I would be most appreciative of any help since I don't foresee a trip to Scotland in my future as we are retired and living on a VERY fixed income. If ever I win the lottery, Scotland is definitely one of the few places in the world I would love to see. Pat Marshall Chezzetcook, N.S.

    3. Dear Bob, I too am looking for a John McIntosh who was once a member of the Dumfries militia. I wonder whether any of the Johns you mentioned could have been him, or whether you have run into this one. This is all the info I have on him: John McIntosh was born 1779, married Elizabeth McLain, (prob born 3.11.1778, d/o George McLean and Christian Laidlaw at St Cuthberts, Edinburgh) was a member of the Dumfries militia at Dalkeith when his son George Laidlow Davidson Mackintosh (LDS microfiche badly transcribed as George Alexander McIntosh) was born 29 December 1808, baptised on 8 January 1809. Godfathers were Thomas McIntosh and Robert Crawford. (regular, not inserted) John was a bookseller and auctioneer at Kirkcaldy according to litigation information (1854). He died 6 December 1856 at Rose Street, Kirkcaldy aged 77 of general decay. According to his death certificate his father was Donald Davidson (sic) and his mother was Janet Davidson. I'm surprised by the 'dark complexions' referred to. Jane

    3. Does anyone know if there is an 1881 census of the whole of Scotland? My grandparents were from Inverness and I am looking for info on their parents though am not sure if they were from the Inverness area or elsewhere in Scotland. My grandmother was Rose Ellen McDermott, born 1896 her parents were Michael McDermott was married to Mary Ann Tierney. Their other children were James, Alice, Catherine, Rose Ellen was the youngest. The children were orphaned at some point and Catherine & Rose Ellen were brought up in an orphanage called Nazareth House. James or/and Alice may have moved to Peebles. My Grandfather was Martin MacDonald born 1894. He had an older brother George and younger were Sandy and Martha, I think Martha later had a farm. Their parents were John MacDonald, mechanical engineer who married a Jane Rhodes. I think the older brother George went to Peru! Can anyone offer any information? I know it isnt much to go on! 3. Thank you to all who responded to my query on Leek, in particular Elizabeth. Now comes the difficult part. The MacDonald family were recorded at Leek in the 1841 & 1851 census a/w some 12 other MacDonald familes and about a dozen non MacDonald families. I've checked the 1881 census but neither they nor anyone else is recorded in Leek. Given the size of the hamlet, and the fact that it still exists today, does this mean that the whole town was missed in the 1881 census? The hamlet is located about 800 yards upstream from the Bridge of Oich and phots from the net show a number of old homes still in the area. Can anyone explain what may have happend in 1881? There were also Hossack's John and his son Samuel who were burgess (elders or councillor type position ) in 1687. Back to more recent times, according to the Inverness directory for 1939 Lochinvar Villa was still occupied by a Mrs Hossack. The house is still there but under different ownership. There are still a few Hossacks around although a lot have moved out of Inverness to the surrounding villages. Hope this helps a little. George -- George D.
