1. [SCT-INV-L] Seeking Ian Ballantyne, Inverness, SCT
2. Bill Caddell
3. I am seeking the address of Ian Ballantyne soon to be 77 years old (his wife is Sheena), formerly of 54 Abbey Drive, Glasgow, G14 9JS with whom I've lost contact. I suspect they may be living at Inverness. I last communicated with them in 1993 at the above address. However, I have verified through Glasgow that they have since moved. They often visited their daughter, Lynn and son-in-law, Alasdair in Inverness. But, I do not know Alasdair's surname. Lynn worked as an Art teacher at the Drummond School for handicapped children, I assume at Inverness. On my last trip to Scotland (June 1993) they were on the same airplane. We all spent several days together. Due to bad weather we were stranded in Chicago, IL for an extra day. They are a grand couple. He was a retired professor of Architecture at the University of Glasgow. We visited with them in Glasgow and also at their childrens' in Inverness. Any help is appreciated. Duncan MCGREGOR was born near INVERNESS in 1784 and came to the US about 1805 or so. At the time this letter was written, he says his parents were both dead and that none of his "brothers or sisters" had been able to pay passage to come to US due to having large families. Does anyone have a clue about the place names of LOCHEARRAN or GAIRLOCH and where they might be located? Most of his siblings seemed to be in GAIRLOCH by 1833-34. Would that be very far from INVERNESS? Gairloch is about what, 100 miles North West of Inverness as the crow flies and about 3,000 by road. (just kidding.) It is on the North West Coast of Scotland in Ross and Cromerty, Ross and Cromarty Scotland Genealogy you can click an go here to search for relatives. Gairloch is a lovely little village on the Minch, the water that separates Skye from the main land. The main road runs along the waters edge. Gaelic is still spoken in and around Gairloch and most of the houses, which are pretty well in rows and connected, or very close glisten when the sun hits them as they are painted in the black and white. Just as you come around the corner there is the Gairloch Hotel, there is also a book shop, a grocers and telephone exchange, (well that may of been replaced in the last few years), a fish shop a post office of sorts, and a police house up the road. Everyone knows everyone and it is a grand place. You can fish or collect wilks, mussles, limpets, etc., from the sea and you can roam the hills all over the area. The roads are very small and things go pretty slow in that area being that, "God in his infinite wisdom knowing how important time would be made so much of it." Oh and there is a school house. Most of the families there have been there for several generations, although there have been quite a few new comers of late. Hope that helps a wee bit. Dave M. PS for more research go to Radio Celtic Home Page and just click the Scottish Flag. I am hoping to make a connection with some descendants of the MCGREGORS that might still be there or at least connect him to the right bunch. >>

3. The Higginson Book Company publishes a catalog of family histories and in the back it is a section entitled, "The Great Historic Families of Scotland." It lists the following: Frasers of Lovat 20 pages for $5.00. Frasers of Philorth &Saltown 3 pages for $3.00. The section states the these family stories are by a scholarly 19th-century historian, James Taylor. The Higginson Book Company has a website. I have ordered many books from them and they are reputable. 1. [SCT-INV-L] Info on Old Parochial Register - 1809
2. Alan
3. Hello all, In my quest for knowledge, I have today received an extract (number 320) from the Old Parochial Register for the Parish of Edinburgh, County of Edinburgh extracted from a Register of Proclamation of Banns and Marriages dated 13 November 1809. Names mentioned are the following: RUSSELL, CLARK, MACARTHUR, THOMSON, MACLEOD, STEPHENSON, NISBET, ARTHURSON, REID, MILLER, FALCONER, JAMESON, BRUCE, GILLES, BEGBIE, HUTTON, HERCULES, HOGGART, ROBERTSON, HENDERSON, MACKINNON. Hopefully someone will find the information below of use. However note that as is to be expected some of the information is unreadable, with those that I am not sure of in "exclamation marks". 10th November 1809 John RUSSELL. brush maker, High Church Parish, and Elizabeth Clark, St Cuthberts Parish daughter of the late John Clark, residenter, South Leith. 11th November 1809 William McARTHUR, Soldier Aberdeen Militia, Edinburgh Castle, and Elizabeth Thomson, Tolbooth Church Parish, daughter of John Thomson, Innkeeper, Parish of "Galinton??" 13th November 1809 John Norman MaCLEOD, Esq of MacLeod, St Andrews Church Parish, and Miss Ann Stephenson, same parish, daughter of John Stephenson, esq, banker, London. James NISBET, flesher, High Church Parish, and Ann Arthurson, St Cuthberts Parish, daughter of Jamer Arthurson, Marinier, shetland. Alexander Reid, tailor, St Andrews Church Parish, and Janet Miller, same parish, daughter of Thomas Miller, labourer, East Linton. Peter Falconer, residenter, Tolbooth Church Parish, and Janet Jameson, Parish of Queensferry, "Relict ??" of Alexander McKenzie, pensioner, "There??" 14th November 1809 William BRUCE, Newnorth Church Parish, and Janet Gilles, St Andrews Church Parish, daughter of the deceased James Gilles, Gentleman's servant (there is then another word that looks like Fife). Archibald BEGBIE, spirit dealer, College Church Parish, and Emily Hutton, "Fron??" Church Parish, daughter of William Hutton, clock maker, Edinburgh. George HERCULES, gardener, College Church Parish, and Jane HOGGART, St Cuthberts Parish, daughter of David Hogart, coachman, Inveresk. 15th November 1809 Andrew ROBERTSON, confectioner, Old Grayfriars Parish, and Forster HENDERSON, Fron Church Parish, "Relict??" of William NEWLANDS, tailor, Ayrshire. James McKINNON, mariner, and Mary McKinnon, New Grayfirars Parish, daughter of Archibald MacKinnon, farmer, Parish of Kilninian, Argyleshire. Hope someone can link in with these, and for info my interest in the REID/MILLER. Best regards Alan MacKenzie Researching mainly MacKenzie and Reid.

2. My ancestor John Martin was a member of Kilmuir parish on and was born in Stenscholl Skye. He left with his family in 1826 to live on Prince Edward Island, Canada. I know the LDS records for Kilmuir parish begin in 1823 and I haven't found any records for my family in the three year period between 1823-1826. Does anyone know if any Kilmuir parish records exist before 1823? Also, are there any known family histories of the Martin family in Skye which might be available? I read somewhere they were a branch of the MacDonald clan and wonder if that is true. Julie Martin
