Hello Rodger, You say new to the list, does that also mean new to genealogy? A couple of things which might help. 1. Did your grandmother say whereabouts in Inverness her family were from? If so include the place name + approx. dates in your message. 2. Can you think of anyone who might be on the 1881 census for Scotland, their approx. age and hopefully ocupation, someone on the list could then look them up on the census cd. 3. Or you can look at the 1881 censu on fiche, yourself, at your local Latter Day Saints Family History centre, a list of centres is at http://www.familysearch.org/ ...... then click 'browse categories' to get to http://www.familysearch.org/Browse/browse.asp..... look at 'Libraries' and continue from there, Hope something turns up, regards, Maureen Kuzyk.

I apologize for the repeat but am at a dead end due to lack of living relatives at this point and being out of the country. There a few footnotes she has added to the "tree" specifying Inverness as "home". Specifically, Thomas GRANT married Jane WALLACE whose mother was Jane LOWREY. Also, I have Murdoch GILLIES (born 1814, Inverness) as having married Sarah MCNEIL whose father was Hector McNEIL. Lastly, I have John RODGER marrying Ann ? and his parents were William and Elizabeth RODGER. If there are any connections out there, I would like to hear from you. If anyone has any lookup data to share, I'd be very appreciative. I can certainly share my lines with anyone interested. Thank you, Rodger Airey --part1_47.1cfce4.26db13c5_boundary--

Hello Jen, I found this among my many "useful" printout lists for genealogy. I think it is the Scottish naming pattern: 1st Son after Paternal Grandfather. 2nd son after Maternal Grandfather. 3rd son after Father. 4th son after Father's brother. and so on until no brothers left, then moving on to the mother's brothers, etc. 1st daughter after Maternal Grandmother. 2nd daughter after Paternal Grandmother. 3rd daughter after Mother. 4th daughter after Mother's sister. and so on, until no sisters left, then moving on to Father's sisters, etc. Hope this helps. Cheers from Tasmania AEnone.
Would some kind person who has the notes at hand for naming children according to Scottish tradition please email them to me. Confusion reigns supreme at this stage! To whom ever gives a darn...I will be dropping the COGECO service, which I have always felt was not worth the money spent on it, and returning to Ma Bell, which is dead slow and half the price. Therefore, my mailing address will change. If anyone cares, the old address will die Sept. 09/00 and the new address will be announced about the same date or so. The Old Petty Church yard monumental inscriptions have recently been done by two different people. There is no indication when it will be published but it should be soon. Are you sure they would be buried there?? If you are looking for a recent burial you should get in touch with Highland Council, Protective Services. They have lists of all internment's in the Inverness area and will do a search for a fee. Try writing to :- Council Buildings, Glenuruhart Road, Inverness, IV3 5NX I remember Smithton quite well, before the housing estate was built it was a young boy's adventure playground. There was an old grave yard, a bridge with a big tree growing at one end blocking half the width of the bridge and the "Clooty Well" just beyond.( Quite a distance before you get to the Cumberland stone.) A description from a book from 1954 on the " Clooty Well". " You have to go down past Blackpark farm to reach the Clooty Well, which attracts hosts of " well-wishers" on the first Sunday of May every year. It is quite an occasion, although about thirty buses and some 300 cars parked in a nearby field in 1953, the number was considered locally as being a poor turn-out." It was originally known as St. Mary's Well, then Fairy Well etc.. It carries on with the history and tradition of the well, but I do not have the time to type it all. Hope you have success George -- George D. Christie " Change is not made without inconvenience, even from worse to better "
