Thanks very much, Iain........Gaelic, anyone? AEnone in Tasmania. PS I just love the Scottish spelling of Iain. I christened my son Neil, and since he grew up to be a Celtic folk singer and has been to Ireland, he now spells it as Niall - wish I had thought of that first! Through his father (my ex) he traces his heritage back to Niall of the Nine Hostages in the 6th Century (Niall of the Nine Sausages, he calls it!)
I have recently resubscribed after changing email addresses and being out of touch for awhile. My interests include MCCASKILL, CHISHOLM, and WALLACE. John Donald MCCASKILL (GGGG Grandfather) born: 1771, Isle of Skye, Invernesshire, Scotland; died: 3 Aug 1859, Pike County, Alabama; buried: Indian Creek, Pike County, Alabama; married: Catherine CHISHOLM, 5 Oct 1797 on Isle of Skye Catherine CHISHOLM (GGGG Grandmother) born: 6 Jun 1772 on Isle of Skye, Invernesshire, Scotland; died: 26 Jul 1855, Pike County, Alabama; buried: Indian Creek, Pike County, Alabama John Chisholm MCCASKILL (GGG Grandfather) born: 28 Feb 1819, Kershaw Co, South Carolina; died: 1 Jan 1893, Cuero, DeWitt Co, Texas; buried: Hillside Cemetary, Cuero, DeWitt Co, Texas; married: Eleanor CRAWLEY, 6 Dec 1843, Montgomery Co, Alabama Isabel Catherine MCCASKILL (GG Grandmother) born: 13 Sep 1843, Alabama; died: 6 May 1929, Mineral Wells, Palo Pinto Co, Texas; married: Jonathan Landrum WALLACE, 31 May 1865, Cuero, DeWitt Co, Texas I have no information regarding parents of Jonathan Landrum Wallace who was born Aug 16, 1833 possibly in Alabama and died Jan 8, 1905, in Mineral Wells, Palo Pinto County, Texas. I have had great difficulty finding any information on him. Anyone have any direction to give me for following any of these leads? I'd love to find the family of John Donald and Catherine MCCASKILL and also to figure out a connection to Jonathan Landrum WALLACE. Thanks. Pam

Hello Listers, As a newcomer to the list I would like to find any possible MacDonald relatives outwith the large number that I have already discovered and also share information about such as Father Coll MacDonald and Mother Mary McKillop. Bill.
I think I speak for all researchers and hopeful researchers who breathe a sign of relief with your most recent posting about staying online. I have only been "lurking" for the last while and the cries of despair over you going offline was deeply felt. Heather MacPherson
Hello Everyone, Just wanted to let those who are interested know that I will be keeping the above sites on-line. This year has been a real roller-coaster ride for me and my family and my genealogical pursuits have, unfortunately, suffered a bit during the ride. As it turns out, I have not only decided to keep the sites on-line, but I will likely be adding to them in the future. The URLS are as follows: STRATHNAIRN HERITAGE PAGE http://www.goodlyheritage.org/strathnairn (aka http://www.geocities.com/~brooms/strathnairn) NAIRNSHIRE HERITAGE PAGE http://www.goodlyheritage.org/nairn (aka http://www.geocities.com/~brooms/nairn) There is still a bit of construction going on. Some of the links may not work as I continue to reorganize and re-structure the sites. Please bear with me. Jane, if you read this, could you please drop me a line. Thanks, Joe Broom __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - Free email you can access from anywhere! http://mail.yahoo.com/
My gggrandfather John BEATON was listed as born 1815 Kastle Skye I have not been able to locate Kastle Skye on any maps or town/parish lists. Does anyone have any ideas as to what or where it could be? Thank you Marilyn Cameron (now back to watching the olympics)
Per "A Genealogy Gazetteer of Scotland" by Evertom Press, 1971. KILMALIE (Lewis' Topographical Dict for Scotland, 1851 ed.) parish 1773 (earliest event in registers, "Detailed List of the OPR of Scotland, 1872) In Argyll and Inverness Counties (located in 1851) pop 5397 (In 1851) Episcopal Church (Church of England) and Roman Catholic - ----------------------------------------------------------- In comparing the Gazetteer's hand drawn map and a current map of Scotland, the center of Kilmalie Parish was located at the current location of Ft Williams, part of Parish was in Inverness-shire and part in Argyllshire. Scots Origins has listed in a table at "http://www.origins.net/GRO/Places/places_K.html" the following: Parish/County/1st Yr/Last Yr/Code-RD No./Current RD No. KILMALIE...Argyll......1773...1854...520...? Hello Everyone: I am planning to order my first cert as last time someone else got it for me. I know I have the right place (Barra) as the number is the same for him & her. Am I correct in sending 8 Pounds and all the details to The G R O for Scotland, New Register House, Princess Street, Edinburgh. Just want to be sure before I send it off. Many Thanks Lorraine Ottawa, Canada
Hi Nancy, Thanks for keeping at it....I too have been searching and can't seem to find anything on LDS or various books that I have for the parish of Kilmallie (98b)......Wonder if someone on the SCT list may have something in regards to LDS - bmd#'s, early description or Kirk Session Records ??? Let's keep our finger's crossed!!! Also looking for the same for parish of Cromdale ???? Bryan Keddy Halifax, N.S. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Bryan, Sorry to say that I do not, as yet, have anything for Kilmallie Parish in Inverness-shire re: description, parish #, or LDS film numbers, but ... I did decide to do some browsing and found a couple of URLs that seemed promising. FRUSTRATION ... once again, what happens to Kilmallie in Inverness-shire? especially early on? http://www.abel.net.uk/~ancestor/county.html Now this ... http://www.rootsweb.com/~sctper/PARISH_NO_K.htm Does have some information for Kilmallie, but not until 1911! Won't be of much help with my 19th Century ancestors and earlier! PARISH NAME YEARS Prefix (X) 11 Parish No. Suffix (X) COUNTY Kilmallie 1911-1927 (B,C,M)11 098B 1 - 9 Inverness Kilmallie 1928-1955 (B,C,M)11 098B/1 1 - 9 Inverness Keeping at it! Nan
Dear Bryan, Not complaining, as I am delighted with the information that IS included on the Parish URL, but ... Wondering why Kilmallie is not part of the listings. Realize that Kilmallie is not exclusive to Inverness-shire, but Fort William is in the Parish of Kilmallie and I expect there are other "communities" that are of interest. Nan
Hello all, I wonder if anyone might remember, or have heard about a fishing and gun tackle shop in Inglis Street. I'll rephrase that, I doubt anyone will remember it as I believe it was early 1900's : ) However, sometime after that, the shop became a hairdressers and tobacconists, with the owners being Alexander John Mackenzie (formerly Aircraftman 1st class RAF) and Mary Ann Mackenzie (MacDonald. Alexander used to live at Donieville, 14 Beaufort Road, Inverness and was my Grandfather, although due to an unknown reason I have never met him, and my Father only know him at an early age. Many thanks in advance for any info. Alan Mackenzie (Mackenzie, Reid, Cameron, Notman ..... and more)
I'm seeking connections with ISABELLA MacKINNON who married Donald Robertson of Strath parish, Isle of Skye circa 1790. Donald A. Robertson, Kyleakin, Isle of Skye.
Hello Stephen, I did reply to you, off-list, but the message bounced. Many thanks for the Darien/New Inverness 'site. Best regards, Iain Rogers, Hong Kong.
I have an Ordnance Survey map of Kintyre, Argyll, and it identifies quite a number of what looks like little beaches all up and down each coast of Kintyre. They have names like Port na Cuthaig, Port Righ, Port na Cuile, Port a' Chruidh and so on, but none that I can see called Port Chranaig. If someone who knows Gaelic could translate the name into English, you might find that helps. I am seeking information on a grocery shop "somewhere near the harbour" in Inverness, possibly called Mackay's. I have a relative called Alexand(e)rina Mackay who may have been connected with such a business. She died, aged approx. 35, in early 1919, a victim of the flu epidemic. Also, has anyone any connection with a journalist (or someone connected with newspapers in Inverness) called John Macleod, during the years of the First World War? Any information welcome. Many thanks. Cecilia Blaney >> If I am not mistaken the shop carried on business until the 60ties and had a blue and white sign just before you came to the train bridge down the Kessock Ferry area. I can't remember the street, (old-timers creeping in) but the bus ran by it for those with money for the bus, we wee ones walk past. I believe it was dry goods, cans and stuff as apposed to a green grocer. It was quite close to a Y or turn off in the road. If you get a map of Inverness and work back from the ferry it is on the Town side of the train bridge about 6 blocks I think. Or it may be another shop I am thinking of, but I am sure my aunt Bessie shopped there and that the name was Mr. MacKay. DaveM.
