    1. [SCT-INV-L] Re: Aluminium
    2. Liz Powell
    3. Sitting in my display case is a small ingot, embossed with : "Lochaber, July 1930". This was a souvenir of the first smelt of aluminium there. Aluminium needs a very high temperature for smelting, hence the smelter being where there was a cheap source of power: hydro-electric. Apre-pos of nothing: Napolean Bonaparte's son was given a rattle made of Aluminium... at that time it was so difficult to smelt that it was considered more valuable than Gold, Silver or any other metal. 3. Hello Dave, I'm not the one who asked for this site but, I'm sure glad that somebody did! Absolutely fantastic! I made the mistake of visiting between 6:30 and 7:00 AM local time! I shall return when it is less dark and gloomy! Thanks a lot. 3. Kinlochleven is a small town about 20 miles south of Fort William and at the east end of Loch Leven. Until recently it was important for the manufacture of aluminium. Claggan, just across the river and a stone's throw from Glen Nevis, was in the Parish of Kilmonivaig rather than Kilmallie Parish in the 1881 Census so I reckon "The Glen" must have been in Kilmonivaig Parish at that time unless there was a sharp demarcation line in the shape of the river Nevis. However, I was born in Glen Nevis and my birth certificate tells me that I was born in the Parish of Kilmallie in the District of Kilmallie in the County of Inverness. 3. Since there has been a lot of mention of the above areas, here are some queries. I am looking for ancestors or descendants or information about - 1. John MACARTHUR who married Sarah BEATON about 1773 and lived in Glen Roy. They had Alex. b. 1774 and John b.c.1778 and Sarah by 1806 Sarah was a widow at Murlaggan, while Alex was tenant at Bochasky. (Duncan McKillop, relation of Mother Mary was at Murlaggan at the same time). 2. John CAMPBELL who married Ann CAMERON about 1775 and had Angus c. 1776 and Ann c.1786. Ann (Cameron) was alive at her son, Angus's house in 1841. This Ann was a sister of Donull Saor Cameron. 3. Ewen MACKENZIE, weaver, and Catherine MACARTHUR who married c. 1812 and stayed at Cour Bridge on the south side of the Spean (fairly near to Spean Bridge). Mary

    3. I have a bit of information on McArthurs or MacARthurs from the Loch Awe area and some of them may have gone to Inverness when they moved out in the early 1800's to Dumbarton near Glasgow. There are so many MacArthurs and so many Johns and Alexanders. But I do have some basic information on one family who lived in Loch Awe and moved out in the early 1800s and were on the Argyle list of 1776. Chris Hawkins in California. Still searching .

    3. Hello I could not let your message pass without a comment about my interest also in the MacIver name. My g-g-grandparents named their 2nd son William Charles McIver Arbuckle. I have other names that were Mc back in the early 1800's but are now Mac so Mc/MacIver probably changed over the years also. The names William & Charles I can see where they came from (his Father's family) but I am suspecting the McIver was from his Mother's family. Her maiden name was Marion McLeod. William Charles McIver Arbuckle was born in North Uist in 1843. If you ever find yours have a Mc/MacLeod connection, I would like to hear from you. Many Thanks Lorraine Ottawa, Canada

    3. Dear Maureen, There is a town called Penola in SE South Australia near Mt. Gambier which is where Mother Mary first began teaching The original School and the local church are set up as a museum to her life the trip back to Scotland to visit the McDonalds is mentioned there . My daughter is related to Mary McKillop's Aunt who married Alex Cameron of Penola. Alexander was my daughter's ggggrandfather's cousin ( through my ex -husband) Mary McKillop was there governess before she began the school. Quite a large section of the town is set up to show life in the days of the early settlers ( about 1860s I would guess) Portland in western Victoria (where many of the HIES ships came to) is another place with connections to Mary McKillop and her father is buried in Hamilton a bit further inland to Portland. There is a Mary McKillop trail in the area where you can drive to the places connected with her early days. This area is about 6 hrs from Adelaide or Melbourne if you were driving Regards Marilyn Cameron

    3. Hi Bill, My gr4grandparents were John [Iain Mor] McDonald (c.1776) and Catherine [Kate] McKillop (c.1776) of Bohuntin, Kilmonivaig. Bohuntin is a hamlet in Glen Roy a bit south of Cranachan where Blessed Mary McKillop visited her McDonald relatives during her trip to Scotland. I was told by the local historian that it's almost certain that I'm related to Mary though documenting it is difficult due to the time frame. It is possible that my gr4 grandmother Kate was a sister to Mary's grandfather John McKillop (c.1782) which would make her my second cousin four times removed. >From your posting, one of your parents was a second cousin to Mary. Would this have been on the McDonald or McKillop side? I have assembled a database of all the descendants that I've been able to trace thus far and would be most happy to exchange information with you. Am also interested in any replies you received to your posting. In 1997 I was fortunate to visit the museum of Mother Mary in North Sidney and will be making a return trip this October. Looking forward to hearing from you. 3. I have been travelling in Georgia, USA during July (and neglecting my e-mails since i got back). While there I saw a billboard for a place called Culloden, Georgia which was having a "ham-slam" but time prevented me from visiting. I did however manage a quick trip to Scotland County, North Carolina - where the name Mackenzie abounds. The county seat is Lauranburg, which is twinned with Oban, Argyll. I met up with local (town police and county sheriff dept) law enforcement officers in Lauranburg, who were quite fascinated to meet an officer from the original Scotland!
