Try this site http://allserv.rug.ac.be/~rvdstich/eugloss/EN/lijst.html the only word I have seen with similar spelling on a cert. is Epithelioma, a Cancer but in the case I have, it was a type of Skin Cancer so may not be correct for the throat, which would I think, refer to something internal Lots of sites have old medical terms http://www.jansdigs.com/Racine/medical.html http://www.gpiag-asthma.org/drpsmith/amt1.htm#e http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~hornbeck/disease.htm etc regards Maureen Kuzyk

    3. Hello Everyone: I would like to "Thank" everyone that came to my aid with medical sites. I have added a list of them at the end. So far, I am now sure that the word starts Epithel???? but I find there are many endings. (ial, ioid, ioma, ium & oid). Think I will now take and enlarge this area on a copier as there is also the word before throat to decipher. Thanks again for all your help. Lorraine Ottawa, Canada P.S. Sure wish this person at the registry office had known I would want this info after more than 100 years. 2. Ron & Sue
    3. Hello from Australia everyone, Quite a few months ago I was looking for information on an Ambrose SALVONA who I believe was a bear/lion tamer for a local Inverness circus. Someone emailed me with information on a locally produced book which contained a picture of a man and a dancing bear. Unfortunately I have lost the name of the book. Would anyone know of the books title? Thankyou, Ron Brown Mandurah, Western Australia. mailto:suenron@southwest.com.au

    3. Hello Again: This looks like problem day. This ad appeared in the "Islander" newspaper in Prince Edward Island here in Canada on Feb.10,1843 under Deaths. In Ireland in June, Margaret, wife of John Arbuckle of Georgetown. Daughter of William Stevens of Tophill, Sterling Place, Scotland. She would have died, I guess, June 1842 but I cannot locate Tophill, Sterling Place, Scotland. I have checked all my Atlas's and Maps. Any ideas appreciated. Lorraine Ottawa, Canada

    1. [SCT-INV-L] BROWN/MILLER 1851 AND 1861 CENSUS
    2. Ken Woodgate
    3. I am not sure how difficult it is to search the 1851 and 1861 census but if anyone can assist would be grateful. 1851 - Alexander BROWNS parents and 2 children are recorded at the family home in Little Cairn Andrew, near Banff. Jane, Mary, Annie, John and Alexander (the latter may have been about 14/15 years old ) are not. We know they were all alive many years later - where were they on Census night? One suggestion is that Alexander BROWN and a 'cousin' Alexander MILLER have been lodging with a SHAW family in FARR, INV. Possibly both young men worked for a William SHAW. No info known on SHAW. The location DORES, INV. has also appeared in a letter held by me. Is anyone able to check the Census 1851 and 1861 for SHAW surname in FARR and DORES with possibility that Alexander BROWN and Alexander MILLER were working/lodging with the family. Any assistance would be appreciated. MILLER later went on to become a school teacher and Minister in the Free Church - eventually emigrating to Canada? BROWN emigrated to New Zealand in the early-mid 1860's Ken Woodgate Wellington New Zealand e-mail: ken.woodgate@xtra.co.nz

    1. [SCT-INV-L] McDonald (of Muchrachd) & Fraser
    2. Don Fraser
    3. I am seeking information on the wife and parents of Alexander McDonald who died at Muchrachd, Glencannich in 1867 aged 83 yrs. His death certificate gives his father's name as Duncan McDonald (Farmer), no mother's name and his wife's name as Helen Fraser. He had a younger sister called Ann (about 6 years younger) who is listed in the 1851 Census aged 55 but doesn't appear in the 1861 Census. Alexander had at least 5 children named Alexander, Janet, Donald, Catherine and Margaret. The family were almost certainly Roman Catholic. I'd also like to know a bit more about Muchrachd (sometimes spelt Muchrach) which looked a very desolate place when I visited the site about 2 years ago. Any help that anyone can provide on this family will be appreciated. I'm also interested in the parents of Duncan Fraser (his death cert. gives their names as Alexander Fraser and Isabella Fraser) who died at Aultvaich in Urray in 1892 aged 89 years. His birthplace is given as 'Stratherrick' in the '71 and '81 Census. Duncan was married to Ann Fraser in Dores on 27 Jan. 1827 and they had 8 children - 7 of them born in the parish of Kilmorack. It's not known for sure whether Duncan had any siblings altho' it was said that he had a brother called Alexander. Again, any help here would be appreciated. Don Fraser (In the Forest of Dean).

    1. [SCT-INV-L] re re aluminium
    2. camb1
    3. Aluminium factories were built at Foyers (on the south side of Loch Ness), Kinlochleven (at the east end of Loch Leven) and at Fort William (Lochaber Works). The latter was completed in the early 1930's. During WW2, it was bombed on several occasions and luckily escaped any major damage. Not pleasant times! On occasions, the fifteen mile tunnel taking water from the reservoirs to the Lochaber turbines was shut down and repairs carried out. Again rather unpleasant! Incidentally, Fort William was the first town in Britain to have its streets and houses lit by electricity produced solely by its own water power. This was in 1896. Bill.

    1. [SCT-INV-L] re Glen Nevis
    2. camb1
    3. I was born in Glen Nevis and my birth certificate tells me that "The Glen" is in the Parish of Kilmallie. This document also states the following - District of Kilmallie in the County of Inverness. A close relative informs me that Glen Nevis has been in Kilmallie Parish as far back as the 1841 Census at least. It should be noted, however, that some other parts of Kilmallie lie in Argyll and not in Inverness - shire. In the old graveyard in Glen Nevis are buried the Camerons of Glen Nevis. At one time the Camerons that lived in this glen were known as the MacSorlies (sons of Samuel or more likely Somerled). Bill.

    2. Iain McKenzie
    3. According to the small scale map of parish boundaries in the SAFHS book "The Parishes, Registers and Registrars of Scotland, the southern boundary of Kilmonivaig parish runs parallel to Glen Nevis. That would make Ballachulish and Ardgour parish a possibility. Kilmallie would be eliminated. 1. [SCT-INV-L] Glen Nevis - Kilmonivaig or Kilmallie
    2. The confusion surrounding which parish Glen Nevis is in may have some light shed on it by the following descriptions (from an eighteenth century description); "The glenns and straths of Mamor, Lochliven, Glenneves, Gargawatch, Glenspean, Glenroy, Dawghnassie, Lochyeld, Glenley, Loughairgaik, Achadrome, and Glengarrie. Lochyeld, Glenley, Loughairgaik, Achadrome, and Glengarrie pertained to the parish church of Kilmallie; Loughlevin, Mamore, and the seven merklands and half - merkland of Glenneves pertaining to Eiland Moune (St. Munn's Isle). Thrie merklands ane half-merkland of Glenneves, Gargairach, Glenspean, Glenroy, Dawghnassie with the six merklands of Glenley pertained to the parish of Kilmaneveg." It was always my understanding that as a general rule Kilmallie was on the Northwest side of the Geat Glen, and Kilmonivaig on the Southeast side. This would place Glen Nevis within Kilmonivaig.
