    3. However it *is* possible for people with certain versions of Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express to get certain viruses (eg Kakworm) from their regular e-mail (not attachments). I don't know whether RootsWeb will catch this, but I doubt it. The solution for this type of virus is to make sure your Microsoft e-mail program has been updated from their website or to use an e-mail program from another company. And/or to keep your anti virus program very current. (Mine missed it because I didn't bother to keep it updated). Most virus warnings are hoaxes. Most people now know to check a good website dealing with viruses for more information, rather than passing virus hoaxes along. They must have been with private messages. Norton will catch any so called viruses, if you update it and the programme will remind you to do that. 'Edom, ancient land bordering ancient Israel in what is now southwestern Jordon, between the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba.' Ness Walk is the "street, or path actually that follows the River Ness down towards the Islands. The Hotel would be on that or rather to the side of that walk way. I know ladies walk is on the same side of the water as the Castle, but Ican not for the life of me remember whether Ness Walk is a continuation, or on the other side of the river, but I think it is. Then again these could just be names we used for the area, as in Ladies walk. It may indeed be Ness walk. Anyway it follows the bank of the river west from the High St. Bridge. Hope this helps Dave

    3. To add to what Lyndall has to say, census enumerators had to supply pen and ink at their own expense. To save on ink they would use pens with a very fine nib, and they would water down the ink. Anyone who has tried to read some of the old census enumerators books will know that recording the data for later generations to read easily was not uppermost in their minds. 3. I'm often surprised that so many people query the spelling variations of a name. Quite apart from the fact that spelling variations occur because a person is illiterate and, therefore, is dependent on the 'hearer' writing down the correct name, have the people who question the spelling variations considered the fact that the scribes had to write with a quill dipped in ink? Abbreviations, under those circumstances, would be the norm! Surely everyone recognises that 'Rbt' = Robert, and that 'Jas' = James etc., without question! The same scribes will confidently wrote Mac as "Mc". It's all quite logical. Lyndall Canberra
