I have noted only one James McPherson married to an Isabella, this couple had three children baptised between 1777 and 1782. Your James in NS at this time so clearly not your man. There is reference to an Ensign John McPherson, however this man was involved in the earlier Quebec conflict and returned to Laggan and is buried in the Old Churchyard at Kingussie. A contingent of Laggan men had enlisted in the 78th (Col Fraser's Regt), many stayed on in Canada after the conflict and took up land grants. Not much help to you I'm afraid.

They were ordinary folk - merchants ,crofters ,mariner. They were Gaelic speaking Roman Catholics. Their name was spelt McDonald in the census or Macdonald on other documents. Ewen McDonald came from the Glengarry part of Kilmonivaig and his wife Annie[Ann] McDonell from Boleskine. They married around 1820- the family bible states Ewen and Annie Macdonald Fort Augustus 1820.When Ewen died in 1862 at 82 it said his parents were Alexander and Mary nee McMillan. His wife was born around 1801 in Boleskine as were their children Mary, Catherine, John[a mariner who later in 1860 married Mary McDonell from Fort Augustus, daughter of Donald and Mary McDonell], Alexander, Donald [my gggrandfather who married Jane Lamont] and Ewen. Can anyone suggest anything? Desparation is now setting in!

I do not know if John was older or younger than James. These brothers joined the 82nd (Duke of Hamilton's Regiment) and went with that Regiment to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1779, subsequently fighting in the American Revolution. The brothers were granted land in Pictou Co, N.S. in 1783 and settled there. James obit describes him as "a native of Badenoch, Invernesshire". James McPherson's wife was named Isabel, last name unknown. I don't know if they were married in Scotland or Nova Scotia. Any help would be much appreciated.

The Anne Logan in question is not Kenneth's daughter, but most probably his sister, though I have been unable to find her birth. It is also possible that she was his cousin, the sister of my ggrandfather. In this case she was born on 14/5/1809 in Killearnan and her parents were William Logan and Isobel MacGregor. Thomas (my ggrandf.) also worked alongside Kenneth, his cousin at Breacachy, so it is entirely possible that Ann was also employed on the farm. Again apologies for the wrong info on previous reply. (Cluny MacPherson, head of that branch of the clan had his home near there and of course when surnames became important, took his name. They may, or may not have been blood relatives. The MacPhersons, or one family of the many in Laggan, were famous pipers. On Ann Logan, I can be more specific, she was the daughter of Kenneth Logan (b. 9/12/1811 in Inverness. His parents were Colin Logan and Ann Henderson) They had strong connections with The Black Isle in Ross and Comarty (not an island!) just across the narrow strip of sea from Inverness. Kenneth married an Isabella MacPherson on 6th December 1842 in Laggan. Kenneth was, at that time the Farm grieve (manager) on the farm of Breacachy in Laggan. Kenneth died in the late 19th/early 20th century in Laggan. Kenneth was a cousin of my great grandfather, Thomas Logan. Kate

Hello This chart may baffle some but it was the only way that I could put them down and understand it better myself. My "Thanks" for much of this goes to Elizabeth in Inverness as it is a very new line for me and Elizabeth sure got me started. If anyone can add or amend anything to this family, I would appreciate hearing. I must now have more cousins out there somewhere. This Rev. Ewen MacQueen is looking like one of my 8X g-grandfathers, Wow. I do have some of the wives names but just tried to get a picture of this part for now. Still not sure it is all correct. Thank You Lorraine Ottawa, Canada ------------------------------------------------------ Rev. Ewen MacQueen of Duirinish (b. abt 1580) had sons 1. - Rev. Could that James (son of Angus) maybe be William instead. ??? ---------------------------------------------
Hi Lilian Thanks for taking the time to look that up for me. After sending the message, I decided to go looking under google and those names are on a site for Ewen / Ewan also. With my MacQueen line right back to Rev. Ewen MacQueen of Duirinish, who was born about 1580, I have found him in places as Hugh also. With that, I can't even say it might be a modern day translation. I will keep all this info in my file as I plod along. Much appreciated. In McAlpine's Gaelic/English Dictionary (10th edition) : Hugh is translated as Uisdean Ewen as Eobhann Lilian espencer wrote: > Hello Everyone > > Another Lister and I have been finding that some of our > ancestors with the names Ewen, often became known > as Hugh. > Would anyone know or have a name book that might tell > if the name Ewen was Gaelic for Hugh. > Just trying to come up with an answer or idea. > Thank You Lorraine Ottawa, Canada > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > > >
Hi Tony My, that was fast and just as I had suspected but had to ask in case. The only time one of mine was different was on the 1861 Census when my Ewen was listed as Heughen. They were just new to Canada then and I guess the census taker did not understand. From then on, he became known as Hugh. I also have many others back further. Thanks for confirming this. Hello Everyone Another Lister and I have been finding that some of our ancestors with the names Ewen, often became known as Hugh. Would anyone know or have a name book that might tell if the name Ewen was Gaelic for Hugh. Just trying to come up with an answer or idea. Thank You Lorraine Ottawa, Canada

According to the genealogy librarian at the Inverness Public Library, Inverness, Scotland, Ewen is same as Hugh. And, I do believe he said it was the Gaelic for it. It is just outside Invergarry in Inverness-shire, just across the river Garry in fact. There is precious little there apart from the lovely views. Just at the road end to Mandally is the Kilfinnan Parish Catholic Church. My GGF(John Grant), GGM (Margaret MacDonald Grant) and two G Uncles (Donald Forbes Grant & Simon Grant) are buried in Kilfinnan cemetry. Hope this information is of interest to you. Kind Regards Charles
I dont know if there are any gaelic speakers on the list, but we have a gaelic unit at our primary school so I am quite used to hearing a 'gaelic' accent (altho even I know there are major variations). I think the census taker probably did a pretty good job of writing down what he heard.
