    3. Can someone tell me if the 1851 census covered Sleat and Strath in the Isle of Skye? I am looking for Catherine NICHOLSON, her daughter Annie (and any others of her family), who I believe were living in either of these areas at the time (probably Strath). Regards Marion NZ

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TeC.2ACE/871.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Interested to see your message. My g.g. grandmother was Mary Mcfadyen who was born in 1821 in Craignish Argyll - her parents were John McFadyen and Mary Gray. She married a William Munro of Skye and went on to have at least 13 children - including 3 sets of twins. I haven't been able to find any of Mary's siblings but she is likely to have had many. McFadyen is not that common a name. Hope this is of some interest. Morven

    3. "I'm a little embarrassed to ask this question of this group, but I do need the answer, so here goes. As I read and write on Highlanders in the nineteenth century I often encounter the terms "Gael" and "Celt", and I'm not sure of the proper use of them. Can "Gael" and "Celt" be used interchangeably? Or do they mean slightly different things? Is one a more "politically correct" term these days? I apologize for asking what may seem a ridiculously basic question, but this seemed the best place for an authoritative answer. Kathy Dear List, Two things: First of all, Kathy, put it this way, a Gael is a Celt but a Celt is not necessarily a Gael. This is a formula that pretty much equates to a Scot being British (from the British Isles) but not all Brits are Scottish. There are different measures of what or who a Gael is (a Highlander, a person of Gaelic speaking/Highland heritage, or purely a Gaelic speaker - this might extend, for some, to a non-Highlander who acquires the Gaelic language; no doubt there may be others who have different interpretations). Celts cover many different groups from the British Isles (including Ireland) and Europe. The most common expression of 'Celts' encompasses the Welsh, Scots, Irish, Manx, Cornish and Bretons. This is a fairly crude categorisation, as England was Celtic before it experienced the Angles. (And to confuse matters more, the Angles were in Scotland before 'Scotland', as we know it, really emerged.) Kathy, this is probably old news to most members but it is usually worth repeating. Anyway, back to the Celts/Gael issue. From Old Celtic emerged two language groups, p-Celtic (Breton, Cornish and Welsh, known as the Brythonic or British branch) and q-Celtic (Scottish Gaelic, Irish and Manx, known as Goidelic or Gaelic). So, as should be seen, the term Celt and Gael are related but not interchangeable; equally, the term British and Celt are also related but not interchangeable.. plus ca change!" James Celts are a race of people and Gaels are a subgroup who speak a different language? Is that what the good professor is saying here?

    3. I'm interested in the following families from the undernoted places. Cromdale Grantown-on-Spey Kirkmichael My Great Grandfather, John Cameron, married Ann Bird in Grantown in 1894 before moving to Edinburgh (Liberton) at the start of 1900's. John and Annie had a large family I believe the only known children to date are Peter, Lewis, Catherine and James Russell Cameron (born Leith). His father was Lewis Cameron (b 1849) and his mother Jessie Grant (b 1831). Her parents were Thomas Bird and Ann Fraser. If anyone has any information please let me know Regards Mark.

    3. Hi Christine Many thanks for your response. The intermarrying sure is confusing at times. There was another John Cameron and Catherine Kennedy (from Feychiarren, Kilmonivaig) who had children at the same time as "my" family. Feychiarren is another of those "towns" I have not been able to locate. To help identify which is "my" Cameron/ Kennedy family I have added below a transcription of the "certificate" I received from the GROS for the birth of Mary Cameron - my g g grandmo. I have found the immigration record of the whole family arriving in Australia so John was apparently an ex shepherd not an ex person. I have recently learned from a posting on the Mull list that such declarations were often made, prior to the family immigrating, if the births/baptisms had previously not been recorded. The death certificate here in Australia records Catherine Kennedy's parents being Duncan Kennedy and Sarah Buchanan and that she was born at Glencoe (the latter not so clear to read). As I said on the last posting, the reference to Mianacha only occurs on an IGI record placed by a member of their church. I agree that Briananach is likely to be a small farm or croft and I will certainly forward to you any useful information which may be forthcoming. Thanks again for the reply Brian ----------------------------------------------------------- Extract of entries in an OLD PAROCHIAL REGISTER 78773 Parish of Kilmonivaig County of Inverness children "The following of John Cameron late Shepherd Briananach, and of his wife Catherine Kennedy, were recorded here to day, by desire of his said wife as being born of the dates under mentioned,Alexander Cameron elder of the Kirk Session of Kilmoni vaig being present and attesting: ? 3. Dear Listers Some assistance would be appreciated. My g g g grandparents were John Cameron and Catherine Kennedy from Kilmonivaig (I know, surnames are not so unusual). In identifying which Cameron family in official records, place names were often used to identify the area from which the family came. John Cameron b. 1808, was a shepherd at Briananach. My Cameron family are recorded on the IGI by an LDS Church member as being from Mianacha or Manacha, Kilmonivaig, although the official GRO records only record Kilmonivaig. Mianacha or Briananach are not mentioned in the 1841 Invernesshire Census. Does anyone know of these place names or how to find out more - given where I live! Cheers Brian Logan Melbourne Australia

    3. Hello to All.What a great response i have recieved from your List Members on my search for Norman FINLAYSON. To answer some of your queries.I dont have a lot on NORMAN FINLAYSON basically only his Death Certificate. He was my Wife's Great Grandfather. On his Death Certificate it states the following. That he was born on the Isle of Skye, and that his Father was John Finlayson and his Mother was Anna Belle Finlayson(Maiden name Unknown). His Death was on the 12th of March 1925 at Chiltern,Victoria,Australia. And he was 82 Years old,and that he had been in Victoria73 Years. It Lists his Wife as Ann Watersand he was married aged 45 at Nurmarkah,Victoria.(I think that is the Town ,Hard to Decipher).Ihave not been able to locate a Marriage Certificate between him and Ann Waters at this stage. His son John William Finlayson was born in 1891 at Sandy Creek(Just out of Tallangatta,Victoria,Australia). He was my Wife's Grandfather .He was killed in the 1st World War in 1916 at France. I have located a Norman Finlayson who came out to Australia in 1852 on the ship"Hercules" Which left Campbelltown Scotland on the 26th of December 1852 and arrived in South Australia. He was with his Family and the Father was John but the Mother is Listed as Margaret(Not Anna Belle) and they came from the Parish of Snizort, County of Inverness it also states their Residence was Burnisdale.I am currently investigating that family and have located a bit on the I-G-Index but not much at this stage. Any help on Locating any Information would be most appreciated. Could anyone tell me how close is the Parish of Snizort to the Isle of Skye and does the Residence of Barisdale Mean anything to anyone. 3. hi Peter dont know the context but if these places could be 'anywhere' then i suggest the first might be Musselburgh, just to the east of Edinburgh. The second, less convincingly, might be Troon, on the Ayrshire coast. the third has been stumped unless it is Dorset, which is a county of course, not a town. If you can send me a scan I will have a look. I am sure others will be happy to do the same.
