    3. Oops - posted the wrong question - here goes this time: Could someone please advise whether McKECHNIE and McECHERN could be interchangeable. I have a death cert (1876) with the wife's maiden name being the later, but it has been known, in recent years anyway, as the former. Is it likely we have a different person; or given that it was a Scots-born person who supplied the information for the cert, could he have been using 'the old tounge' when naming the wife's maiden name. She was either already deceased or never came to this country. Many thanks Elizabeth O'Connell New Zealand

    3. Hello I have been exploring again, the Statistical Accounts of 1791-1799 and for 1845. The one of Barray / Barra was done as of January 1840. Would anyone know how often these Accounts were prepared in each area. Would there likely have been others and they only have these 2 on-line. Just wondering about it. Any ideas appreciated. I can find information on a much earlier ship and one much, much later, around World War I. Does anyone have a relative who could have been a passenger on the Royal George in the mid 1860's? 2. Jan Robison
    3. Hi, all. I'm new to the list. I am trying to trace my 3rd great grandfather, Robert Roberson, who was born "on the ocean" in March, 1786. I have a hunch that his parents probably left Scotland via Portree. Does anyone have any information on any other ships that left there besides the ones in 1803??? Thanks! 3. We are having trouble locating a family c. 1790s in the OPRs and was wondering whether there was another 'religious faction' at that time and could our family be recorded in another set of records. Or .. if there were other religious factions at that time, did those people still have to be recorded in the Church of Scotland Registers (OPRs)? (They were not Catholic). The family is CAMERON who are believed to have lived at Invermaille on the South shore of Loch Arkaig, so my cousin searched the Kilmallie film. Although finding 'hundreds of Camerons', he was unable to find brothers John & Angus. The mother's maiden names of the brothers were Ann McINTYRE &/or McMILLAN and we have another dozen or so names of siblings, so we believed we had enough information to positively identify this family. Given there were families from Invermaille on that film and ours wasn't there, should we be looking elsewhere - like Kilmonivaig OPRs or another set of religious registers? Has anyone got any suggestions please? Many thanks Elizabeth O'Connell New Zealand

    3. There were indeed many other factions at that time. The OPRs come from the established church - the Church of Scotland. They handed their material over to the nation and that is why it can be searched at Register House in Edinburgh, or online at Scotlandspeople. The competition were the secession churches which broke away over such issues as the right of the congregation to choose a minister. They then had their own schisms and reunions. Then in 1843 there was a mass breakaway from the Church of Scotland, forming the Free Church. (And then more splits and reunions). All of which means that in some parishes pre 1855 lots of people would not be attending the parish church. Perhaps as many as half the population. They would need to have their marriage banns called there, but they would be married and baptise their children in the church of their choice. Membership was particularly strong in the artisan ie skilled working class families. Some records of these churches survive and are to be found at the National Archives of Scotland. these are many Kirk Session records - the records of the committees who ran things. I dont know whether the Inverness region was particularly affected, but one way to check is to go and look at the online Statistical Accounts for Scotland. (Follow links from National Library of Scotland site). The parish ministers who compiled these reports often give a summary of the extent of secession attendance on their patch. bear in mind too that people who attended non Church of Scotland churches werent limited to their home parish. The nearest church for them might be a distance away, or they might go a bit further for a preacher they approved of. On the other hand there are many other reasons for 'missing' families. It would be a good idea to find some corroborating evidence for the family being in the parish eg place of birth in 1851 census, or a will. There is a Keppoch in the Highlands, near the West coast... close to the coastal area across from the Isle of Skye. It's rural but the area still exists. Other towns near by would be Dornie, Glengarry. A bigger town not too far away would be Fort William. Or Mallaig (I might not be spelling that one right). It's a beautiful area, I was cycling by day and camping or B&Bing by night! I wasn't in Keppoch but I was pretty close and I even saw an old map in an antique store which now I wish I would have purchased. It was one of those ordinance survey maps that show the hills and elevations and stuff. (Good to have when cycling!) I am trying to research info on some MacDonnell people, the man was born in 1708 and he had a wife named Mary; at least one son; and the man had at least 1 sister. His name might have been Ian, or Iain, or Eoin, or Angus. It's hard to do on these boards, I'd like to go back and poke around in the cemetary and see if I can find out more! In each area it seemed like all the people in the cemetary had the same name. I saw Campbells, Fergusons, etc in the towns I went through.

Looking back at my query, I realize I should have worded it better, but my Great-Great Grandfather was Duncan McKay and his brother was Neil McKay, They also had a sister Mary who married Alexander McKinnon from Muck. Between these three, Mary, Duncan and Neil, they had thirty children, although Neil had the advantage of being married twice. Their Mother was Ann McMillan, also from Muck, b. 1788, and their father was John McKay, unfortunately all I know about him is his name, but I believe he was from the Isle of Muck as well. The McLean's I mentioned were other families that arrived at the same time from the same place, but have so far found no direct connection, family wise.
