Strange about the places for William Arbuckle as the Fasti says he was Lic. in 1798 and transferred to Stornoway in 1802 as schoolmaster. In 1806 he went as missionary to Sand & Sollas then Sept. 23, 1813 to South Uist. He was trf in 1815 to North Uist to the church his father built in 1764. William died in North Uist January 27, 1818. Strange about the MacQueens as this is a new name for me but so far, I think there was an Angus born about 1610 and another b. abt. 1650. I do appreciate you adding to the bits I do have. Good Luck Lorraine (Canada)

We received an email this weekend from Finlay Macdonald, albeit in Lewis rather than Inverness-shire, but the problem could occur anywhere in the Highlands where land has not been brought into community ownership. This is not about genealogy directly, although it helps explain why many of you are reading this message in Canada, Australia or America, rather than Scotland. It is about real problems which continue to face people living in the Highlands today. He apparently lived for many years on Skye and can be found in the 1861 census of Snizort living in the household of Alexander Macdonald at Lynedale House. He is listed as a joiner and as married but have not been able to ascertain who he married. He is also found in the 1881 census in the same household. In 1851, he was in Markinch as that was the year his father died and he may well have been there to settle the estate; he has his son, Joseph, with him in 1851 and he is staying in the household of an Agnes Pearson. He may have been living on Skye as early as 1832 since his father's will, written at that time, describes John's place of residents as Skye. John had an elder brother, Charles Norval, b. 1797 . Charles married an Agnes Anderson in Fifeshire in 1822. He also had a sister, Margaret, who married a Peter Lang of Gallatown; another sister, Janet, married an Alexander Kilgour of Thornton, Markinch and eventually emigrated to Pontiac County, Quebec, Canada. If anyone has information re: John Norval of Lynedale House, Snizort, I would love to hear from you. Sue

They submerged these graves in the new lake it seems. Maybe thats why some of you who have Roman Catholic folk from Glengarry area of Kilmonivaig can't find where they are buried Any suggestions of where such a list might be? surely it was recorded as part of it's consent

Dear Jen, How fantastic to have a living source of historical knowledge in your family! Do you have any Alexand(e)rinas in your line? I'm having problems with my Mackay line. I have an Alexandrina Mackay, born around 1885, possibly in Inverness or further north; mother possibly named Isabella. Any sign of them in your tree? Good luck with your research. Best wishes, Cecilia London, UK

My great great grandfather was William MacGregor (born circa 1785-1788), supposedly from Gairloch, who married Helen Gillanders in Galson, Stornoway in 1820. William's parents (our g-g-g-grandparents) were Rodk. (presumably short for Roderick) McGregor and a McKenzie (first name unconfirmed, but we believe her name was Christian). Does that ring a bell to you?

Like I said, I am very new at this and all I have to go on is a pedigree chart that my grandpa gave me. Hope to hear from you soon! Jen
