Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TeC.2ACE/1140.1 Message Board Post: Alexander was born not on South Uist but on the separate Isle of Benbecula, which was at the time part of the parish of South Uist. You will find him aged nine months in the 1851 Census for the township of Hacklet on the south-east quarter of the island, with his parents John MacLeod and Flora MacAulay. John was shown in the Census as b. 1816 and Flora 1824. Both were probably born in North Uist, at least if Bill Lawson's Register of Emigrants from the Western Isles of Scotland to Ontario, Part 1 Bruce Grey and Huron Counties is to be believed [see SUE232 or ON201]. However, I have John' father as from Lidistrome, Benbecula so it may be that his family had moved en masse rather than he himself moving to Benbecula when he married. Again according to Lawson, John and family emigrated frpom Hacklet to Kincardine Twnshp, Bruce County about 1851. Does that sound right for location? I very much doubt that the Bell part of Alexander's name was given at birth and suspect it must have been something adopted later. He had a younger sister Catherine b. 1852/3 who married Lachlan Bell. Could he perhaps have adopted the name in honour of his sister for some reason? Or could there have been an Alexander in the next generation who had the name? If I can help any further, do drop me an e-mail; the details are behind my name on the message board. Not sure I will be able to find anything further but I will have a look.

Hi Marilyn, To answer your last question - Yes, these are very common Scottish names. Have you checked Scotlandspeople.gov.uk for the 1855 marriage of Ewen & Mary? If you do find one you're in luck. The records for that first year (and only that year) of Civil Registration in Scotland contain an unusual amount of information. On that same fee-based website you'll also be able to access the OPRs (Church of Scotland Old Parish Registers) for the other pre-1855 events. These last records are also available to search free of charge at your local LDS (Church of Latter-day Saints) family history center, if there is one near you. If you succeed in determining a locale for the family, you can also order microfilms (for a modest fee) of the 1841 and 1851 Scottish censuses from their main library in Salt Lake City to examine at the local center. Good luck! My information is very sketchy I 'm afraid but it is all I know at present. My ancestor's name was EWEN CAMERON born 2/1/1794 in Lochaber. Maybe this exact date may be a clue for someone out there to be able to find some record of him for me so I may learn more about him and wife MARY MCDONALD. eg When and where married etc. He married in circa 1855 in Lochaber to MARY MCDONALD who was born 1831 in Inverness. I don't know whether this was Inverness the shire or Inverness the city. He was in his 60's when they married and she was in 20's. The couple moved to Australia in circa 1857. MARY MCDONALD was born in Inverness - not sure if this was the Shire or the city. Her father's name was ANGUS MCDONALD and her mother's name was JESSIE surname not known. She had a brother ARCHIBALD MCDONALD born circa 1826 and a sister CATHERINE "KITTY" MCDONALD born circa 1824. As these are common Scots names I am finding much difficulty in researching them and any help would be very much appreciated. Thankyou, Marilyn.
