    1. [SCT-INV] From Cromdale & Kirkmichael (Banffshire) to Edinburgh and Leith
    2. Mark Cameron
    3. My Cameron line seems to have come to Edinburgh from Cromdale. John Cameron (b. XXXXX) moved to Liberton, Loanhead then Leith with his wife just around 1900. They had x children that I am aware of so far but believe there were more. Peter Fraser Cameron (b. 1895 born Grantown) – died in 1906 (aged 6) in Loanhead. Lewis Christopher Forbes Cameron (b. 1898 in Grantown) – married Catherine Liddle in 1921 in Edinburgh. He died in 1969 in East Fortune Hospital (although his usual residence was listed as Seafield Road, Leith). Catherine Jane Cameron (b. 1900 in Kyle of Lochalsh, Ross and Cromarty). Was married to William Gibson in Dundee in 1920. Died in Redbraes Place, Edinburgh in 1951. John Alexander Cameron (b 1902 in Lasswade) died aged 3 months in Loanhead. There was then a gap of 10 years before another child – were there any other children ???? James Russell Cameron (b 1912 in Leith) – this is my grandfather. Married Alice Eccles in 1933. Died in 1970 in Edinburgh. The father’s father was Louis (or Lewis) Cameron (b. 1849 in Kirkmichael). He had John to Jessie Grant (b. 1831 in Cromdale) but they never appear to have married. I am really confused as to what happened to Louis. He shows in 1881 on the census living with his parents (aged 32) in Cromdale – occupation saddler. I can then find no trace of him from there. HELP!!!! Louis’s father was John Cameron (b. 1812 in Cromdale) and his mother Margaret Fraser (b. 1820 in Kirkmichael). They married in 1838 in Kirkmichael. The IGI shows a number of children born to John Cameron and Margaret Fraser in both Kirkmichael and Cromdale and I think there must be more than one couple involved as there are births which are too close together for one couple to be involved. If anyone has access to the 1841, 1851 census records and can find this family I would be interested to know who their children were. The above John Cameron’s father was Lewis Cameron (or Lawson) - (b. 1795 in Cromdale) and his wife (Johns’ mother) was Grace Grant (b. ????). They appear to have had other Children James (b. 1810), Thomas (b. 1816) , Alexander (b. 1819) and Ann (b. 1821). If anyone has any links please let me know. The other names in my tree from Cromdale area are Grant, Fraser, McIntosh, Stewart, MacPherson, Fletcher. Regards Mark --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. [SCT-INV] William McKay Armstrong
    2. John Bartlett
    3. Dear All, Having decided to find out more of my Scottish past I went to the Scotland's People site. Here, knowing that my William was born about 1804-1806 in Ardersier I registered and entered Mackay Armstrong, McKay Armstrong, and the Armstrong and Mckay bits separately in the free search facility covering 1800-1810. Surprisingly there were no recordings of registrations in Scotland for those names over that period. Hence my query. How good is that search engine? Were there really no Mackays or Armstrongs being born, dying or getting married between 1800 & 1810? Enlightenment would be welcome please. John Armstrong Bartlett

    2. What a rousing good time we had with the McNEIL family. And now the MacDONALDS. I would surely love to get something going on the CAMPBELLS. This will be short because I'm not sure how to do it. Will write more if it is O.K. The earliest I have is "Red" John in Gairloch, Rosshire. He was born between 1794 and 1798. We had him listed as marrying Annie Urquart. Someone along the line said she was a Miss Stewart (or Stuart?). He had children Duncan, John, Jessie and some more. They moved to Cape North, N.S about 1833. My G-grandfather, Charles Urquehart Campbell was born there in 1834. Charles married Betsey MacIntosh. They moved to North Dakota about 1879. I 'll write more later. This might get it started! Joy Campbell Voss

Sadly we aren't related family but perhaps we will help someone else some day. Not only did many Norwegians come to Michigan, Minnesota and North Dakota to settle------my own father's grandparents came into North Dakota from Canada having previously traveled all the way from Scotland and England. Canada provided a home to so many emigrants-----thank God for them Good wishes to you on your search. Bonnie.

I am sorry, but this is not the vestvik family I was looking for. "My" vestvik or Vestvig family came from Sveio (Sveen) parish, Hordaland county near Haugesund. That is more south in Norway that where your family came from. It was a Tollef Olson Vestvik who emigrated to USA around 1880. His son Hans Olson Vestvig born 1879 lived in Renville county ND in 1910 census, I also think I have found his name in a land grant record for Canada later. Helga

    1. [SCT-INV] LOUIS (or LEWIS) CAMERON - WHERE DID HE GO????????????????????
    2. Mark Cameron
    3. Okay I’m stuck and need some advice from seasoned researchers. My Great Great Grandfather Louis Cameron disappears from Scotland by the looks of things after the 1881 Census. He is on the 1881 census at tenement 40 So Side in Cromdale, Elgin. He was aged 32 and unmarried and still living with his parents (John and Margaret). He had fathered a child John Cameron to Jessie Grant. The options as I see them are: I’ve missed him on the 1891 and 1991 census in Scotland (possible) or he died or moved away from Scotland. I couldn’t seem to find a death certificate and am not sure where to start to determine if he moved away. Can anyone help?? Regards Mark --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. She was the only child of Johan Ingolf Vestvik, a tailor, born 1882 in Skjorn and died three months after mother was born. Johan was a son of Mathias Pettersen and Ingeborg Anna Gabrielsdatter from Bjugns or Stjorn. Grandmother Augusta Kristine Hopen, Vestvik and mother came to Minnesota in 1920. Grandmother married a Mr. Finsvik. I had a relative named Westvik or Westvig who lived in Seattle, I believe he was a brother of Johan Ingolf Vestvik. I know very little else about my grandfather, grew up only knowing of step grandfather Finsvik. Would love to know your connection. Could we be related. Bonnie Jeanne Brooks Howard

If anyone has access to Bill Lawson's book "Index marriages (recorded and unrecorded) in the parish of Harris, Inverness-shire, 1820 - 1855" (spelling as in FHL Catalog) I would appreciate a look up for Gillis and Ferguson especially in the Farm or Hamlet of Strond or in Rondel. My Gillis and Ferguson's lived in Strond in the 1841 Census but I think the church was in Rondel. bob gillis
