Get a map of Quebec and trace a nine up the two main western highways from Montreal. They both split from each other just off the Island of Montreal, the 40 will take you to Toronto along the St. Luarance, (Lawrance) River, the other the 117 archers north to Ottawa. Hawksbury, (Prescot Russel County) is just about 10 miles over the Ontarion Border. Lancaster is on the 40 going to Toronto, well almost on it.They are about 60 miles apart as the roads go. It was at one time where the train, (Montreal Toronto run) was probably split for those going to Ottawa. Hawksbury is a town with a population of about 40,000 including the rural areas about 50% French. Lancaster is probably about 2,000 including cats dogs and cattle and about 90% Scots. Glengarry County has one of the largest Highland games in Canada in MaxVille, and has their largest Town/village of Alexandria where the police station is. There are massive historic societies, there and the last NATIVE Gaelic speaker only died about 5 years ago or so. If Lancaster does not have a web site I know that Maxville, about 20 miles up the road does. Here are some of the search pages. .AOL Search: Results for "Lancaster Ontario Canada" AOL Search: Results for "Maxville Ontario Canada" AOL Search: Results for "Hawksbury Ontario Canada" Hope this helps. I too have these names in North Carolina. My MacLeod family married McInnis lines, McGilvary lines and McDonald lines. I have information that I've received from others, but always get very confused by the same families marrying each other when I try to do this research myself. Do you have any information regarding a Murdock McLeod b 1755-1774 in Inverness who married Christian McSwain? It does not appear that my particular branch was in America until after 1790.

    3. Try contacting the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Before the website you could just ring 'em up, now I believe it takes a while to get an answer, but they may have more info in their files. I think there is also a CD Soldiers who died in the Great War, but I dont have a copy. The local newspaper may well have carried a report, sometimes there were quite lengthy pieces on individuals. The family may well have inserted a death notice. Once you have identified the newspaper it is worth phoning the local library as they may have it on film. A brief lookup for a specified date is often provided free of charge. Remember it may be a weekly paper, so if someone died on a Wednesday it might just have made the Friday edition (for example) but is more likely to be in the next week. If you can get the train to Edinburgh then check www.nls.uk. They may have copies of the newspaper. If you intend to visit the library phone before hand as it may not be available on site and it is frustrating to ask for something that you can't get until the next day. You will also need a readers ticket so find out what id etc you need to bring. Hope this helps. It seems that there surnames changed in the early times depending on who they worked for, if they worked for the Cameron Chief they took the last name, if they moved off to the MacDoncald estate they took that last name. Very confusing, and very hard to find out who they really were.

    3. I am looking for information about seven Cameron brothers who supposedly emigrated from Inverness to Upper Canada about 1826. Their names are Angus, Laughlin, Neil, Charlie, Peter , John and Hugh. This information was in a book titled Directory of Scottish Settlers in North America 1625-1825. The brothers I am looking for settled eventually in Oro Township but may have started in Thorah. Does anyone know of this family or have access to the book? I am looking for my ancestor, Duncan Cameron born in Argyllshire about 1792. He married Margaret Sinclair, possibly from Islay, and emigrated to Canada with their daughter Mary about 1834. The brothers may or may not have been relatives of Duncan. Marjorie Cameron McQuay

    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Marilyn Bulkeley To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, November 11, 2003 11:23 AM Subject: Census Hi all Would anyone have access please to a census for Inverness for 1851(or for maybe some date before that) for a lookup for some McDONALDS that I am searching for. I have hit a brick wall in searching for them and any help would be appreciated. These are the family I am searching for:- ANGUS MCDONALD married to JESSIE ? (Maiden surname not known) parents of the 3 children (or maybe more) given below - "KITTY" or KATHLEEN/CATHERINE MCDONALD b circa 1824. (She remained single) ARCHIBALD MCDONALD b circa 1826. (Married in Australia well after 1855) MARY MCDONALD b circa 1831.(My direct ancestor) (See below re her marriage in 1855 in Scotland) MARY MCDONALD was born in Inverness. This was on her death certificate - not sure if this was the Shire or the city. She married in circa 1855 in Lochaber to EWEN CAMERON who was born 2/1/1794 in Lochaber. He was in his 60's when they married and she was in 20's. The couple moved to Australia in circa 1857. If it helps at all, all this McDONALD family were Roman Catholics. With thanks Marilyn Bulkeley [email protected]
