These days it is quite a tortuous journey by car, but in 1845, the nearest date I have, there were four steam vessels per week carrying goods and passengers from Campbeltown to Glasgow. He could also have travelled on to Liverpool and crossed the Atlantic from there. Hope this helps. Judy in Edinburgh

John was born approximately 1843 in Campbelltown(??); parents may have been John & Rosanna McKenzie, though that may just be family misinformation. My g-grandfather John emigrated to the USA (either as a shiphand or a stowaway), arriving in New York City around 1860, possibly earlier. He married Irish-born Mary Clancy about 1863, and they had 7 children. When Mary died in 1875, John married German-born Anna Meyer and father 4 more children. He died in Brooklyn, New York in 1901 from tuberculosis. The only reference I have to John's birthplace is on the death certificate of one of his son's, which makes mention of "Cambelton, Scotland." Any help would be appreciated. Please contact me at [email protected]

I have been able to finally make a firm connection to the following family members located in Scotland. I'm looking for anyone that could provide some help. I'm looking for anything that may help. George Gunn, son of William (2) Gunn, grandson of Hugh Gunn, great grandson of William (1) Gunn. I believe that Hugh Gunn was in the 78 Regiment (of Foot?) stationed at Ardersier Parish in Inverness. I have heard some mention of Fort George. He was married to Margaret Cuthbert in 1809 in Ardersier Parish. William (2) was christened on 10 May 1814 in Ardersier Parish. He married Margaret McIntosh on 17 Mar 1838. She died 1870. Their children were Mary - 13 Mar 1838, Isabella - 25 Jan 1840 - 1882 Inverness; Hugh 17 Jan 1842, James 22 Feb 1844, George 11 Feb 1846, William 13 Aug 1838. These are not birth dates but christening dates. Reportedly Hugh and William (1) were born in Rogart Parish, Sutherland. Thank you, Jeff
Thanks to all who replied have now got the place firmly on the map.

Sharon, Colonel David Ross was the executor of a will belonging to my 3rd great grand uncle (my ggg grandfather's brother) Colonel James Mitchell. Col Mitchell left him a gold watch as a token of their long friendship. Col Ross was living at Tirinidrish (Tinnadrish or any other variant spellings) near Spean Bridge at the time the will was written in November 1847. You might find them in libraries etc. They contain information on things like carriers routes, postal rates, Members of Parliament, charities, Justices of the Peace etc. The most useful thing I find is the church lists, although usually only the Church of Scotland is indexed.
