    3. Hi Rick I can give you some general answers, without knowing in detail the local places you mention. You can get information on Scottish counties at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ Click on Invernesshire and you get a list of parishes and other information. You can look up Scottish placenames on http://www.scotsorigins.com/ Spelling may be a problem, but often you can find out which parish it belongs to. As for the same child being born in 2 places, that appears often because the birth was registered in the father's parish and the mother's parish. 3. Hoping someone can help. On the Scotlandspeople I found the marriage of Catherine Fraser and James MacDonald 02 November 1822 in Inverness, Inverness, but there was no image available. Can anyone explain why? Is the 1841 or 1851 census of Inverness indexed as I am hoping to find Catherine and James MacDonald with daughter Margaret MacDonald (christened 1825 in Inverness) and possibly other siblings. In 1825 James was a labourer residing in Kingmylies. Any help appreciated.

    2. Earl Chapman
    3. Greetings, This is my first post on this list. My great-greatgrandfather, John McDonald, was born about 1770 on the Knoydart peninsula in western Inverness-shire. John married Nancy MacKinnon and they had at least seven children, all born in Knoydart. Three of the children (including my great-grandfather) immigrated to Canada, and the other children immigrated to Australia. I am hoping to be able to find John and Nancy's marriage date and location. This is where I need some help. I have no idea which parish to search, assuming they married in Knoydart about 1795. Can anyone help? Would this parish have been microfilmed by the Mormon Church? Also, I believe that the Canadian immigration took place around 1853 so presumably the children should show up on either the 1841 or 1851 Knoydart Census [the children who immigrated to Canada were: John, Archibald, and Roderick (my great-grandfather)]. Again, can anyone point me in the right direction so that I may obtain the Census from the Mormon microfilm records? I hope to hear from someone in this regard. Sincerely, Joan Chapman (nee MacDonald) Montreal, Canada

    3. First of all, a very big thank you to those of you who replied to my first posting about hugh Maclean. You have given me some very useful tips although no one jumped up and said "We belong to the families you are looking for". In this posting, I am listing other people who were mentioned in the will. This is more for the interestof others than for me, although it would be nice to know something about these people. Some of them might come from Inverness. In the will dated 11 August 1838 and signed in Edinburgh, Hugh appointed Malcom Macleod esquire of the parish of Saint Catherine, Jamaica, Alexander Elder Esquire of the firm Smilth Elder & co, Bookseller, Corn hill, London, & Robert Bartlett Parry of the parish of Kingston, Jamaica (Not yet investigated, but we assume a relation of his partner Ann Bartlett) to be his executors and trustees. William Falconer Esquire. I don't understand much of this part of the will - will make it the subject of a separate positing, but it seems to involve the selling, alienation and disposal of the Barony of Lentran as per a plan drawn by Neil maclean in 1814. There is a mill (more later) which was acquired by Thomas Fraser from Simon Lord Lovat - 14 September 1736 Also to do with the mill - "Hugh Fraser of Culkobokie as heir to William Fraser of Culkobokie, his father, dated 12 April 1670" To his servant Angus MacEachrin there was one hundred pounds sterling 12 months after his death if Angus was still with him at the time of his death. Witnesses were James Wilson Hamilton, writer , Edinburgh, Duncan Macdonald, writer to the Signet (Can someone please explain what this position was) and Alexander Christie, writer. In a codicil dated 18 June 1842 (signed in London) other people mentioned are: Slaves still living who had belonged to him or Ann Bartlett and were still living at the time of his death. No individual names are given Roderick Macleod, Manager of the Branch of the National Bank of Scotland at Portree - is nominated as another Trustee and Executor. Witnesses - A K Morton, Y Hill, John Ford. I will try to copy the part of the will that refers to the Barony of Lentran for a later posting. It will take some time as I am working from a photocopy of a "transalation" of the original which was done by my cousin some years ago. I don't understand a lot of it which doesn't help when transcribing. I hope the above is of interest to someone Wendy in Brisbane
