    3. Hello Kathleen, I found Cowan's Close on a modern map of Edinburgh. See http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=326280&y=672883&z=1&sv=326280,672883 &st=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf&dn=521&ax=326280&ay=672883 I found East Rose Street on a map from 1838. It is between, and runs parallel to, Prince Street and George Street. It terminates on the east end at St. Andrew's Square. I do not know if this modern Cowan's Close is also the historical one. Nor do I know the parish boundaries. Ignoring that, the distance between these two places is approximately 1 mile.
