Thank you to everyone who responded to my requests for a map of Rose St and for information with regard to its history. The general consensus is that the street was a red light district from the late 1800s to about 1970 or so. My great-great grandmother ran a lodging house there after her husband died according to the 1851 and 1861 census. Can anyone tell me what Rose street looked like during those decades? Im hoping that the red light didnt go on until maybe the 1890s? ....kathleen
I cannot find the original e mail relating to Rose St., have been out of action for a few days. My Grandfather Alfred Simpson Dick, owned a Saddlers & Bootmaker shop , in Rose St., I have a photo with the men / workers outside & the Shop signage above. When he married ( Janet Montgomery ), in 1907. he lived at 111 Rose St., Edinburgh. I assume he may have been living above or behind the Shop. By July 1908, my Father was born at 8 Bright Terrace, Edinburgh. Does anyone know what is at 111 Rose St now ? When in Edinburgh, I forgot to find 111 Rose St ., ( so many things, & places to find , ) I did , however go to 8 Bright Terrace, about 7 years ago.
